Transport fares: GPRTU not bigger than Ghana” – MP chides union

The Vice Chair for Road and transport Committee in Parliament, Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, has criticized the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) for increasing transport fares.

This follows an adjustment of transport fares upwards by 20 per cent by some commercial transport operators across the country

An announcement by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) authorized the operators to review transport fares upwards.

Confirming the development to Atinka News, General Secretary of GPRTU, Godfred Ablubire said the increment had become necessary due to rising fuel prices as well as that of other key components including spare parts and lubricants.

He explained that the operators have been hard hit by the recent increase in fuel price from GH¢10.80p at the pump to GH¢11.40p.

“The union compelled to implement the fare adjustment after several attempts by the Union to meet other stakeholders including the Ministry of Transport to reach a consensus on the matter failed”, he added.

In an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Sefwi Akontombra Constituency, called out GPTTU for disregarding the transport laws.

According to the lawmaker, GPRTU is guided by laws and so they are not autonomous as they are claiming.

“GPRTU is not bigger than Ghana, they are guided by laws and as such they are required to work with it. We have interacted with the ministry and the ministry has stated that they are not aware and did not authorize an increment. The committee has oversight responsibilities and so we will invite them to answer questions,”   Alex Tetteh Djornobuah told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.
