The Director of Capacity Development and Outreach at the National Peace Council, Mrs. Janet Sarney Kuma, has led some stakeholders to commit to peace to ensure there would be peace during and after elections.
She did this at the launch of Atinka Media Village’s election flagship programme, Abatuo Fie.
Atinka Media Village (AMV) on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 launched its election coverage programme, Abatuo Fie in a grand style at the Sika Hall.
The programme offers a platform for political actors and electorates to interact before the much-anticipated general elections.
It also provides the most intricate, minute, and infinitesimal details worth knowing about the various constituencies as far as voting patterns and trajectories are concerned.
The Abatuo Fie launch was attended by dignitaries including representatives from various political parties, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and crucial stakeholders in the country.
A team of competent and intelligent Presenters tasked to champion the programme were also unveiled.
Mrs. Janet Sarney Kuma who was a Keynote Speaker at the event commended Atinka Media Village, saying that she was pleased with the AMV for launching such a programme and bringing on board stakeholders to engage them on elections.
“I believe the platform they have introduced will be a very good platform for meaningful discussions,” she said.
She was of the view that a world without peace has no development, saying that,”Peace is absolutely essential, if you do not value peace then try war.”
Looking at countries that have experienced war in the past including Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Liberia where their citizens were displaced, killed and others, Mrs. Janet Sarney Kuma stressed that there was nothing good to talk about when a country experiences war.
To ensure peace, she said the Council was doing a sensitisation on the Vigilante Act 999, taking into consideration the chaos some vigilante groups caused during the past elections.
According to her, due to the chaos these groups caused, the Council went into communities to educate the people about the Act, urging them not to engage themselves vigilantism.
She said they also educate the people on what will happen to them if they get involved and are caught.
Aside from the above, Mrs. Janet Sarney Kuma said the Council together with some stakeholders including the National Media Commission and some journalists have also created a guideline on hate speech, adding that they also preach about it so that people will be responsible when they talk.
“I believe that we want to hold on to our peace and we will all do whatever we can to hold on to that peace,” she stated.
She also expressed hope that no matter the situation, the country will have a peaceful election devoid of killings, civil strikes, devoid of so much confusion.
She then asked all to commit to ensure peace before, during and after the election saying without a peaceful election, Ghana’s democracy is gone.
