We are constructing real roads;not Green Book propaganda roads- Akufo- Addo

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says Ghanaians are witnessing, at first hand, the declaration by Government of 2020 as “The Year of Roads”, as road projects in every Region of the country are ongoing.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the Essiama-Nkroful-Telekubokazo road, in the Ellembelle constituency, President Akufo-Addo expressed his delight that “it is under my time as President that the road leading to Nkroful (hometown of Kwame Nkrumah) is about to be constructed.

Indeed, the Essiama-Nkroful-Telekubokazo Road links of Kwame Nkrumah, as well as linking major cocoa growing areas in Anyinase North. It will also provide the shortest route from Esiama through Telekubokazo to Aniben junction to Tarkwa and Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Area.

Reiterating the comment made by the Chief of Esiama, Nana Enuquagyan II, who described the President a “promise keeper”, the President added that “I am someone who promises and delivers, and that is something I want Ghanaians to know, so they can trust me.”

He continued, “I told Ghanaians that this is the year of roads. Ghanaians can testify to this. We are not doing ‘green book’ propaganda roads, we are doing genuine roads on the ground for all to see. All my roads are ‘feeli feeli’ roads, not green book roads.”

The road was awarded for construction on 5th November 2019, with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation being the funding agency. It is a 6.50-kilometre stretch, which is being constructed by M/S Memphis Metropolitan Ltd, and is expected to be completed on 29th April 2021, at a cost of GH¢5,520,130.51.

Other roads being constructed in the enclave include the 20-kilometre Telekubokazo to Aiyinase Road, which is being fully funded by the Government of the Republic, acting through the Ghana Road Fund; the 30.2-kilometre Essiama to Telekubokazo Road, which, again is being fully funded by Government, through the Ghana Road Fund.

Upgrading to bitumen surfacing of the Gwira Aiyinase to Gwira Wiawso feeder road, and upgrading of the 3.20-kilometre Egyam Town Road are other road projects being done.

Bawumia must resign over "infrastructure lies and deceit” -Inusah Fuseini

0

Inusah Fuseini, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has asked the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to desist from throwing dust into the eyes of Ghanaians.

This statement follows comments made by the Vice President of Ghana Bawumia during his presentation of the Akufo-Addo government’s infrastructure record on Tuesday.

Bawumia said the NPP’s infrastructure projects provide value for money, unlike that of the erstwhile National DemocrAtic Congress (NDC) administration.

According to Bawumia, the Akufo-Addo government, has, apart from its pursuit of an inclusive infrastructure development for all, has also focused on delivering the best value for money for all of its projects.

Bawumia cited the constructing of four major interchanges; Tema, Pokuase, Tamale and Obetsebi Lamptey interchanges which the NPP built at a cost of $289m whereas the Mahama administration built the Kwame Nkrumah interchange alone at a cost of $260m.

For the Pokuase interchange, which is 75% complete, Dr. Bawumia explained that the loan agreement for the project was signed in November 2016 for a three-tier interchange, but the Akufo-Addo government renegotiated for a four-tier interchange without any increase in cost.

Reacting to the Bawumia’s presentation in an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Inusah Fuseini, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) negotiated with the African Development Bank for the Construction of the Pokuase interchange which the NPP is taking credit for.

Inusah Fuseini refuted claims that the Mahama administration did not construct the Kwame Nkrumah interchange at a cost of $260m.

He explained that the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange was built at the cost of €74m and not $260m as being alleged by the NPP.

“ How can a vice president peddle such falsehood. He should resign from the office of the vice president. The Kwame Nkrumah interchange was built at a cost of €74m, it is not even in dollars. He should bow his head in shame,” he added.

Medical Laboratory professionals must be recognised and fully rewarded as frontline staff-GAMLS

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) is calling on government to reward and recognise medical laboratory professionals as frontline staff.

“Medical Laboratory professionals continue to make significant contributions to the fight against COVID-19 in areas of sample collection, transport, testing and research in our laboratories across the country. The invaluable contribution of Medical Laboratory professionals must be recognised and fully rewarded as frontline staff,” GAMLS stated.

After deliberations and developments in the health sector and matters affecting the practice of medical laboratory in Ghana, GAMLS established that there is unjustifiable delay in providing Public Health/Clinical Laboratories in Ghana including GHS/ Quasi/ CHAG facilities with PCR and GeneXpert equipment as well as consumables needed to test for COVID 19 in all Teaching and Regional Hospital laboratories across the country as provided for in Ghana’s approved National Preparedness Plan and Strategy.

The Association therefore recommended that an urgent action is required to resolve the above challenge to improve turn-around-time for testing and treating COVID 19.

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) is the sole professional body of all medical laboratory professionals in Ghana, registered in accordance with the Professional Bodies Registration Decree, NRCD 143 of 1973 with registration number PB-2 on 25th July 1973.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of Ghana Association of Medical laboratory Scientists having met on 6th August, 2020 and deliberated extensively on developments in the health sector and matters affecting the practice of medical laboratory in Ghana hereby made the following observations.

  1. That Medical Laboratory professionals continue to make significant contributions to the fight against COVID-19 in areas of sample collection, transport, testing and research in our laboratories across the country. The invaluable contribution of Medical Laboratory professionals must be recognised and fully rewarded as frontline staff.
  2. That there is unjustifiable delay in providing Public Health/Clinical Laboratories in Ghana including GHS/ Quasi/ CHAG facilities with PCR and GeneXpert equipment as well as consumables needed to test for COVID 19 in all Teaching and Regional Hospital laboratories across the country as provided for in Ghana’s approved National Preparedness Plan and Strategy. An urgent action is required to resolve the above challenge to improve turn-around-time for testing and treating COVID 19.
  3. That Government recently granted financial clearance to some healthcare professionals and must be commended. However, this financial clearance excluded medical laboratory professionals who are urgently needed to improve the understaffing challenges currently plaguing public health laboratories across our Country. This poses a threat to efforts aimed at achieving Ghana’s Healthcare targets.
  4. That the continuous neglect by the government to implement the National Health Laboratory,

We are completing inherited projects – Bawumia

0

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has shot down claims by the opposition NDC that the Akufo-Addo administration has neglected  projects it ‘inherited’ from the previous government.

Presenting the Akufo-Addo government’s infrastructure record in Accra on Tuesday, Dr. Bawumia said it is pure propaganda for anybody to claim that the current government has not continued with projects initiated by its predecessor.

“Contrary to the propaganda, the evidence is that we have also completed or working to complete many projects that our government inherited,” Dr. Bawumia said.

In the educational sector for instance, the Vice President noted the government has completed some of the E-blocks it inherited and is also in the process of completing the rest.

“Contrary to propaganda, in addition to what we have done, we have also completed several health projects that we inherited from the previous government,” the Vice President noted.

“Out of 30 infrastructure projects inherited, we have completed 16 of them including 10 polyclinics and 2 district hospitals. There is also ongoing construction of another 9 district hospitals.”

In his infrastructure presentation, Vice President Bawunia spoke extensively on the massive  infrastructure investment made by the government of President Akufo-Addo since assuming office in 2017.

Infrastructure projects in key sectors such as education, health, roads, railways, water and sanitation, sports and energy featured prominently in Dr. Bawumia’s presentation.

To ensure independent verification of all infrastructure projects the government has undertaken since 2017, Dr. Bawumia announced a government delivery tracking website wwwdeliverytracker.gov.gh, which provides detailed information on projects, location and their current status.

Mali's president quits after soldiers mutiny

0

Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta has resigned, after being detained by soldiers on Tuesday.

In a televised address he said he was also dissolving the government and parliament, adding: “I want no blood to be spilled to keep me in power.”

He and PM Boubou Cissé were taken to a military camp near the capital Bamako, drawing international condemnation.

A spokesman for the soldiers called for “a civil political transition leading to credible general elections”.

Mr Keïta won a second term in elections in 2018, but there has been anger over corruption, the mismanagement of the economy and a dispute over legislative elections. It has prompted several large protests in recent months.

There has also been anger among troops about pay and over a continuing conflict with jihadists.

What did Mr Keïta say?

Wearing a surgical mask amid the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Keïta resigned in a brief address on state television.

“If today, certain elements of our armed forces want this to end through their intervention, do I really have a choice?” he asked.

“I hold no hatred towards anyone, my love of my country does not allow me to,” he added. “May God save us.”

What have the soldiers said?

A televised statement was read out early on Wednesday on behalf of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People.

Air force deputy chief of staff Col-Major Ismaël Wagué said: “Civil society and political social movements are invited to join us to create together the best conditions for a civil political transition leading to credible general elections for the exercise of democracy through a roadmap that will lay the foundations for a new Mali.”

He added: “As of today, all air and land borders are closed until further notice. A curfew is in place from 09:00 to 17:00 until further notice.”

Flanked by soldiers, Col Wagué said: “Our country is sinking into chaos, anarchy and insecurity mostly due to the fault of the people who are in charge of its destiny,”

What do we know about the mutiny?

It remains unclear who began the mutiny, how many soldiers took part or who will now take charge.

It appears to have started when mutinying soldiers took control of the Kati camp, where the president and PM were later taken.

BBC Afrique’s Abdoul Ba in Bamako says it seems to have been led by Col Malick Diaw – deputy head of the Kati camp – and another commander, Gen Sadio Camara.

After taking over the camp, about 15km (nine miles) from Bamako, the mutineers marched on the capital, where they were cheered by crowds who had gathered to demand Mr Keïta’s resignation.

On Tuesday afternoon they stormed his residence and arrested the president and his prime minister – who were both there.

The president’s son, the speaker of the National Assembly, the foreign and finance ministers were reported to be among the other officials detained.

Kati camp was the focus of a mutiny in 2012, also by mid-ranking soldiers, who were angry at the inability of the senior commanders to stop jihadists and Tuareg rebels taking control of northern Mali.

What has the reaction been?

When news first broke of the mutiny, the United Nations and African Union both called for the release of those held by the soldiers.

The Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), a regional body, also said its 15 member states had agreed to close their borders with Mali, suspend all financial flows to the country, and eject Mali from all Ecowas decision-making bodies. In recent months, Ecowas has been trying to mediate between Mr Keïta’s government and opposition groups.

The UN Security Council is to meet on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments in Mali.

Mali’s former colonial ruler, France, was also quick to condemn the president’s detention, and Foreign Minister Jean Yves Le Drian urged the soldiers to return to barracks. Mali is a key base for French troops fighting Islamist insurgents across the Sahel region.

A member of Mali’s opposition M5 movement, which has held protests against Mr Keïta for the past few weeks, welcomed his resignation.

Prof Ramata Sissoko Cisse told the BBC World Service: “I think it’s a relief for the Malian people and for all the citizens of Mali to finally hear from the president that because of the lack of support of the Malian people he finally accepts to resign, to give back power to the people.”

M5 is led by the conservative Imam, Mahmoud Dicko, who has called for reforms after rejecting concessions from Mr Keïta.

Govt outdoors website to track projects

0

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has outdoored a website designed to capture and make easily accessible, data on all of the Akufo-Addo government’s infrastructure projects since it assumed office in January 2017.

The website, www.deliverytracker.gov.gh, has been populated with data sourced from the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and provides information on the status of roads, agriculture, industry, sports, housing, airport, sea defence, fish landing sites, markets, security and digital infrastructure.

The Vice President, who unveiled the website in Accra on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 during a virtual Townhall meeting showcasing the NPP’s infrastructure record, said the centralized portal will enable all Ghanaians, researchers, CSOs, and interested persons have access to and interrogate the data.

The Townhall meeting formed part of a Results Fair organised by the Ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation in collaboration with the Ministry of Information.

“The infrastructure data can be obtained by sector (education, health, etc.) by region or by district. As the name implies, “delivery tracker” is a portal where you can track the status of delivery of government promises and also infrastructure projects. It will enhance transparency and accountability in our governance. It will also enable government to monitor all infrastructure projects to ensure that uncompleted projects are prioritized in the process of capital budgeting,” Dr Bawumia explained.

“The portal will be regularly updated. As far as we know, Ghana is the only country in Africa that has implemented this publicly accessible delivery tracker for its infrastructure projects.

“I would like to note that we have not applied any standardized units for counting projects. For example, you may have a project that constructs 120 units of apartments and another project that constructs 25 units of apartments. They will be counted as two projects in the database. We are focusing on the description of the projects, their details and locations so that we can monitor.”

To make the data even more user-friendly, “Pictures and digital addresses are being added for each project on the portal,” the Vice President noted.

Commenting on claims that the Akufo-Addo government had nothing to show for its almost four-year term, Vice President Bawumia declared:

“Our opponents are welcome to show us what they accomplished by way of infrastructure initiated in their first term in office. This is because virtually all the key projects they like to point to were completed in their second term of office. We are however happy to compare our three and a half year record with their 8 year record. The data will show that the infrastructure we have provided in many districts over just three and a half years surpasses what they provided in 8 years. We have done more while actually spending less as a percentage of GDP because of value for money.

“Also, contrary to the propaganda, the evidence is that we have also completed or working to complete many projects that our government inherited. We have also put in place a solid base of digital infrastructure to propel the digital economy in Ghana.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I will like to note that we are not just building infrastructure, we are building a nation. We are building all this infrastructure while staying committed to our social contract to providing free senior high school education, creating jobs, transforming agriculture, industrializing the economy, sustaining the national health insurance scheme, digitizing the economy, ensuring the public safety of Ghanaians, and keeping the lights on. We still have much more to do.

“The future is bright if we stay the course. That is why we are asking the good people of Ghana to give Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP “four more to do more for you.”
