PNC Greater Accra executives smoke peace pipe with Flagbearer Hopeful

0

The Greater Accra regional executives of the People’s National Convention (PNC), led by its Chairman, Bala Maikankan, have smoked a peace pipe with Flagbearer Hopeful, Samson Asaki Awingobit, after months of some misunderstandings.

The peace smoking meeting which was held in Accra and engineered by Mr Samson Asaki, as part of his bid to unify the Party’s front at the regional level, also had in attendance some executives of the Ashaiman constituency where the Flagbearer Hopeful is a card bearing member.

It would be recalled that, the Greater Accra regional office of the PNC, last month issued a statement to disassociate themselves from the candidacy of Mr Asaki, following some statement he made during a campaign tour to the Upper West Region, which the executives deemed it insulting to their persona and that of the party.

Saturday’s meeting between the two parties, was aimed at ironing out all differences and presenting a united front ahead of the Party’s regional and national Congress which comes off later this month.

Regional chairman, Bala Maikankan admonished Mr Asaki to ensure his words are guarded by the tenets and virtues upon which the PNC was build upon.

Samson Asaki Awingobit, who accepted his offence despite acknowledging his statement were taken out of context, also promised to abide by the virtues and vision of the PNC, moving forward.

He also called on the regional executives to support his candidature to win the ultimate prize and restore the Party’s lost glory.

Hannah Bissiw denies misappropriating bird flu funds

0

National Women’s Organiser for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw, has denied misappropriating funds allocated to compensate farmers whose birds were affected by the outbreak of Bird Flu in 2015.

This comes after Excellent Ghana, a civil society group, accused the National Women’s Organiser for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw of misusing and channeling funds meant to compensate farmers whose birds were affected by the outbreak of Bird Flu in 2015 into other projects.

The group added that although the erstwhile NDC government adopted tough measures to contain the bird flu outbreak, it is shocked at the revelation by Mr. Victor Oppong, President of the Ghana Poultry Farmers Association that, majority of their members whose birds/farms were destroyed due to the Bird Flu outbreak are yet to be compensated five solid years after their livelihoods were destroyed.

Responding to the accusations on Atinka News Friday 11th September 2020, former Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw, noted that if the group had done due diligence, it would have known that monies are not paid directly to ministers or their deputies.

According to Hannah Bissiw, the Bird Flu pandemic was not a one-time disaster and so the then government sought to find a lasting solution to the menace.

“ I would forgive whoever made the accusation because its obvious he or she does not have in-depth knowledge on how government functions and has been tasked to speak against my work. He should listen and learn. We requested for 22 pick-ups , station wagons, PPE’s, as well as compensation packages which were given to the affected farmers at that time. Reagents and others were also requested to be distributed to high risk town to assist the farmers as part of government’s efforts to fight the menace and so no money was given to Hannah Bissiw”, she noted.

Confusion rocks Tema DVLA over premium license

0

Tension is mounting at the Tema Regional office of the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority DVLA, over their inability to produce premium licenses for prospective drivers.

An application for a premium driving license comes at a cost of GHC 800ghc to 1,200ghc with a cover note and that of a license card all issued within 4 weeks, whiles the standard application which cost some GHC 200ghc is issued within 3 months.

However, that has not been the case of some prospective drivers who have applied for their driving license through the premium service.

According to some of the aggrieved drivers who applied for their premium driving license some months ago, they are have been kept in the dark by Tema DVLA officials without any official communication on why their driving licenses are yet to be issued.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is IMG-20200911-WA0034.jpg

Mr Frank Obeng who made a payment of 330ghc for his license card through the premium service on August 12th told Atinka News that he’s yet to even get his cover note, talk less of his licence card. “My brother, ever since I applied for my Driver’s license card through the premium service, in August, I’m yet to get my card and it’s over a month now, which is not the normal practice,” he lamented.

68 -year -old pensioner, Mr Francis Sanahene, who applied for the renewal of his license through the premium service, says he has been commuting from his Community 25 residence to the Tema DVLA office for the past one month, but yet to get his card, whiles attempt to retrieve his money has proven futile.
According to sources, the situation has compelled some DVLA registered agents who work as intermediaries for the processing of the license cards, to flee from their work, due to the excessive barrage of abuses and attacks from some of these agitated drivers.

Management and staff of the Tema DVLA office, have also resorted to a hide and seek game with the drivers, due to their inability to get their driving license cards.

Officials of the DVLA when contacted refused to comment on the matter, which they attribute it to some technical challenges.

Nigerian state approves castration of convicted rapists

The state assembly in Kaduna, in north-western Nigeria, has approved full surgical castration as punishment for those convicted of rape.
State commissioner for woman’s affairs and social development, Hafsat Baba, described the approval by the state assembly as a “welcome development” and said that it will serve as “deterrent” for rapists.

State governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai will now need to sign the bill for it to become law in the state.

In June Nigerian governors declared a state of emergency over rape and violence against women and children in the country.

The number of successful prosecutions of rape suspects remains low and stigma often prevents victims from reporting incidents.

The deputy minister explained that the double-track system, which was introduced by the government in 2018 was a remedial measure to ensure that no qualified student was denied access to senior high school education due to the lack of infrastructure or funding from the parents or family.

Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists elated over NDC manifesto

0

The sole professional body for the practice of Medical Laboratory Science in Ghana, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), has expressed gratitude to the major opposition party for recognizing the need for the establishment of a Medical Laboratory Science Council (MLSC) to regulate the practice of the profession in Ghana- a proposal that has been on the table since 1973.

The establishment of a Medical Laboratory Science Council was captured in the National Democratic Congress (NDC’s) People’s Manifesto, which was launched on Monday, September 7th 2020.

According to the GAMLS, it believes having the Council in place is the only way to ensure that Ghanaians benefit most from the services that Medical Laboratory Science Professionals provide in the country’s healthcare delivery system.

The professional body also commended the NDC for its plans to establish two National Infectious Disease Centres and to develop strategies to reduce the cost of health care by promoting local production of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and diagnostic test kits.

Below is a statement:

GAMLS APPLAUDS THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS (NDC)

PARTY ON MANIFESTO PROMISE TO SET UP A MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE COUNCIL

The sole professional body for the practice of Medical Laboratory Science in Ghana, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS),  has welcomed the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Manifesto promise to establish a Medical Laboratory Science Council in Ghana, when it comes to power.

GAMLS wishes to express its gratitude to the major opposition party for recognizing the need for the establishment of a Medical Laboratory Science Council (MLSC) to regulate the practice of the profession in Ghana- a proposal that has been on the table since 1973.

The Professional Association believes, having the Council in place is the only way to ensure that Ghanaians benefit most from the services that Medical Laboratory Science Professionals provide in the country’s healthcare delivery system.

An MLSC will offer the required independence, as suggested and presented in the Scheme of service developed for Health laboratory services by the Head of Civil Service as far back as 1989 when Dr. (Mrs.) Mary Grant was the Deputy Secretary for Health under the PNDC (OHCS HLS/Est.-48). This initiative is also in sync with international best practice.

The need for a Council to govern the practice and operations of the sector has been a source of agitation among medical laboratory scientists and for which GAMLS has embarked on industrial actions in recent times. Therefore, we welcome the creation of a Medical Laboratory Science Council

The professional body also commends the NDC Party for its plans to establish two National Infectious Disease Centres and to develop strategies to reduce the cost of health care by promoting local production of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and diagnostic test kits.

On page 64 (Section 7.1.3) of the NDC Manifesto titled: Jobs, Prosperity and More: The People’s Manifesto, 2021-2025, launched last week, the Party promised, among other plans for the health sector, that it will establish a Medical Laboratory Science Council should the party win the 2020 National Elections.

GAMLS wishes the NDC Party well.

Kind regards,

Dr. Dennis Adu-Gyasi, FWAPCMLS (Immunol)
