Fashion designer Lagerfeld dead at 85

0

Superstar fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has died, aged 85, in Paris.

The German designer, who was the creative director for Chanel and Fendi, was one of the industry's most prolific figures, and worked up until his death.

Lagerfeld also designed collections for his own brand and collaborated with high street brand H&M.

The designer had been unwell for several weeks, and had missed a number of fashion shows.

Many fashion industry heavyweights have paid tribute to Lagerfeld, including Italian designer Donatella Versace.

Designer Henry Holland also posted a tribute on social media, using one of Lagerfeld's own quotes.

Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, said: "We are deeply saddened to learn the news of Karl Lagerfeld's passing today. His unrivalled contribution to the fashion industry changed the way women dress and perceive fashion. He inspired generations of young designers and will continue to do so."

He was born Karl Otto Lagerfeldt in 1933 in pre-war Germany. Lagerfeld changed his original surname from Lagerfeldt, because he believed it sounded "more commercial".

He emigrated to Paris as a young teenager, and became a design assistant for Pierre Balmain, before working at Fendi and Chloe in the 1960s.

But the designer was best known for his association with the French label Chanel.

He began his long career with the fashion house in 1983, a decade after Coco Chanel died. Lagerfeld's designs brought new life to the label, adding glitz to the prim tweed suits the couture house was known for.

Lagerfeld worked tirelessly, simultaneously churning out collections for LVMH's Fendi and his own label, up until his death.

He also encouraged new designers, like Victoria Beckham, who praised him for his kindness.

Kwesi Pratt: Lack of coordination in security setup scary

Veteran Journalist and Managing  Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt, says the enquiry into the violence at the Ayawaso West Wuogon is a clear indication of the lack of coordination at the level of the top people handling national security in the country.

A commission of Enquiry was instituted to investigate the violence which occurred during the by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency on January 31, 2019.

The four-member commission has Mr Justice Emile Short as Chairman, with Professor Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu and Mr Patrick K. Acheampong as members.

Some persons including the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery; National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah and Minister of State in charge of National Security, Bryan Acheampong, Jean Mensah, EC chair have already appeared before the commission to give accounts of what happened during the by-election.

Kwesi Pratt noted that the contradictory accounts presented by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery; National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah and Minister of State in charge of National Security, Bryan Acheampong at the Commission's sittings indicate that these people did not even meet to discuss the violence at the Ayawaso by-election.

The renowned Journalist who made these remarks on Atinka AM Drive Tuesday, asked Ghanaians to take clues from the commission’s sitting and desist from politicizing vigilantism since the country itself is not safe.

“So the security architecture of the country is fumbling with combating internal vigilantism, what will they have done if we were attacked by Boko Haram or other external terrorist given this lack of coordination among the national security itself”’, he added.

Debate on Mahama’s eligibility flawed -Lawyer

0

Constitutional lawyer, Paul Kumi, says the former President John Dramani Mahama’s re-election bid is valid unless proven that he is not of sound mind or has, questionable  citizenship.

Former President John Dramani Mahama’s re-election has been  challenged by one Stephen Agyeman ahead of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential primary  scheduled for February 23, 2019.

According to Mr. Agyeman, Mahama’s re-election move violates the 1992 Constitution and he is thus asking the court to stop the former president from contesting in the NDC’s presidential primaries.

Stephen Agyeman is seeking a declaration to the effect that John Mahama “cannot purport to seek re-election as President of the Republic of Ghana” pursuant to Articles 68 clauses 2 to 9 of the Constitution.

Mr. Agyeman argues that the former President enjoys some privileges as former President, raising funds to support his bid for the presidential ticket of the NDC, without the permission of Parliament, he “has contravened Article 68 (2) of the 1992 Constitution.”

But Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Constitutional Lawyer, Paul Kumi explained that there is a clear cut clause in the Constitution which spells out how the President can serve two terms and what should constitute a term.

“Sometimes I don’t understand why some people go ahead and do this… the constitution has been very clear on this issue; it is clear in the constitution. Mahama only completed the term of former President Atta Mills which isn’t part of his term, this is a very over-simplistic interpretation of the whole issue.
