US states sue Trump over border wall

0

A coalition of 16 US states led by California is suing President Donald Trump's administration over his decision to declare an emergency to raise funds for a Mexican border wall.

The lawsuit was filed in the court for the Northern District of California.

It comes days after Mr Trump invoked emergency powers to bypass Congress and secure funding for the project – a key campaign pledge.

Democrats have vowed to contest it "using every remedy available".

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said they were taking President Trump to court "to block his misuse of presidential power".

"We're suing President Trump to stop him from unilaterally robbing taxpayer funds lawfully set aside by Congress for the people of our states. For most of us, the office of the presidency is not a place for theatre," he added.

The lawsuit filed on Monday seeks a preliminary injunction that would stop Mr Trump acting on his emergency declaration while a legal battle takes place in the courts, the Washington Post reported.

Mr Trump announced the plan after Congress refused funding for the wall.

The first legal challenge followed swiftly on Friday. A liberal advocacy group, Public Citizen, sued on behalf of a nature reserve and three Texas landowners who have been told the wall may be constructed on their properties.

Governor Gavin Newsom of California dismissed the president's decision as "political theatre" while New York state's Democratic attorney general, Letitia James, promised to "fight back with every legal tool at our disposal".

Joining California in the lawsuit were Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Virginia and Michigan.

The states argue that President Trump's order to divert funds to pay for the wall would cost them millions of dollars, damaging their economies.

Manchester United knock Chelsea out of FA Cup

0

Manchester United's Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba headed first-half goals to claim a 2-0 win that dumped FA Cup holders Chelsea out of the competition and secured a place in the quarterfinals in an intense tie at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

Spaniard Herrera finished off a fine move with a precise header from Pogba's cross just past the half-hour and United's French midfielder scored himself when he nodded powerfully home from a Marcus Rashford delivery before the break.

It was a measure of revenge for United, resurgent under interim coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who lost to Chelsea in last May's Wembley final under their former boss Jose Mourinho.

After the game United were drawn to face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in the quarterfinals (all matches live on ESPN+ from March 15-18).

The fifth-round defeat piled more pressure on Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri, whose side were hammered 6-0 last week in the Premier League by United's neighbours Manchester City. Chants of "sacked in the morning" broke out in the second half.

United's Sergio Romero had pulled off a fine double save in the 11th minute from a spinning David Luiz free kick headed for the top corner followed by a stinging shot from Pedro.

Three minutes later Kepa Arrizabalaga had to fly to his left to keep out a Herrera strike. The lively Rashford also kept the Chelsea keeper under constant pressure.

Chelsea's fragile defence was split with crosses from either flank. Pogba supplied the first in the 31st minute after a fast move down the left and Herrera ghosted into the box to nod the ball down past stranded goalkeeper Arrizabalaga.

Until that moment a lively game had been evenly poised, with a host of chances at either end.

Chelsea's hopes were crushed just before half-time in a speedy United counter down the right, with Rashford crossing for Pogba to head powerfully home between defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger.

United were able to drop back and defend after the break, making occasional forays up the pitch but always confident of keeping an increasingly toothless Chelsea attack at bay.

The home side's best chance of the half came in the 63rd minute when Eden Hazard, reportedly a target for Real Madrid, jinked his way through, only for the Belgian's shot to be expertly diverted by United defender Victor Lindelof.

The home fans jeered Sarri's like-for-like substitutions. The Italian has been criticised for stubbornly sticking to his tactics and failing to change games.

United, on the other hand, looked like a team on a mission, playing for their coach and each other and brimming with the confidence that comes from turning an ailing season around.

Their only reverse since Norwegian Solskjaer took over was last week's Champions League home defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.

The contrast was reflected in the boos from some Chelsea supporters at the final whistle, while a jubilant Solskjaer celebrated with his players in front of the travelling fans.

Husband allegedly disfigures face of wife for refusing to give anal sex

0

A man has allegedly injured the face of his wife for not succumbing to his sexual desires.

The woman, who is from Kijichi Mkoa in Western Zanzibar, Tanzania is nursing her facial injuries after she was beaten by her husband for not giving him anal sex.

Although her husband had been pestering her for long for anal sex, the victim said she refused to give in because Islamic practice does not advocate anal sex.

Meanwhile, she said her husband accused her of being naive on sex matters anytime she refused to do the unnatural.

“He began demanding anal sex from me three months after our wedding. I told him: ‘no’; straight away! He, however, kept on urging me to give in to his demands. Even when I was seven months pregnant, he still wanted to have anal sex with me. I stood my ground, nonetheless,” the woman told Tanzania’s Mwananchi Newspaper.

According to the woman, Neighbours of her husband who knew him before her marriage to the man disclosed to her that the man’s demand for anal sex drove other women away from him.

On the other hand, the accused denied the claims by his wife, explaining that the fight between them broke out after his in-laws demanded a lot of money as dowry from him.

According to the suspect, his wife’s family mocks him for being “broke”.

The Police are however investigating the woman’s allegations.

No amount of propaganda can erase shame on Ayawaso violence – Mahama

0

Few days after declaring the NDC’s position on the Ayawaso violence to foreign diplomats, Former President John Dramani Mahama has been lashed with criticisms from stakeholders in the country, including senior Minister, Osafo Maafo who called his actions irresponsible.

The minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah also criticised Mahama for peddling falsehood to the international community.

After being slammed by the NPP, Mahama on Monday Morning took to his Facebook page to prove to his critics that he did nothing wrong.

“Thanks to videos filmed by television stations and other individuals, the true identity of these hoodlums, identified as members of the Invincible and Delta Forces of the NPP have been revealed.” He said.

Meanwhile, Mahama remarked that no amount of propaganda from government can erase the shame this country was subjected to on that ‘bloody Thursday’.

“No amount of government sponsored propaganda and distraction will take away the stigma of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, as darkest day in the history of Ghana’s 4th Republican democracy,” he said.

The Former President also cautioned the NPP government to own up its responsibilities and ensure that the perpetrators of the violence are brought to book.

“Government must own up to its responsibilities and ensure the prosecution of the criminal elements who it deployed in Ayawaso West Wuogon. It is those actions that paint the country black internationally, not those who expose the dastardly acts sanctioned by government and its appointees,” he added.

Below is the full statement by John Mahama

No amount of government sponsored propaganda and distraction will take away the stigma of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, as darkest day in the history of Ghana’s 4th Republican democracy.

The substance of the matter is the violence meted out to innocent Ghanaians by hoodlums of the ruling government, paraded initially as state security personnel.

“Thanks to videos filmed by television stations and other individuals, the true identity of these hoodlums, identified as members of the Invincible and Delta Forces of the NPP have been revealed.” He said.

The victims, injured on the day, did not take guns and shoot themselves. They were injured by powerful assault rifles given to partisan hoodlums for the purpose of intimidating Ghanaians who were peacefully exercising their franchise in a by-election.

The meeting held by my office in conjunction with the NDC Party and the Minority in Parliament was to correct the false impression given to the diplomatic corps that NDC was the cause of the violence in Ayawaso West Wuogon.

No amount of propaganda from government can erase the shame this country was subjected to on that ‘bloody Thursday’.
In any case, this is not the first, and will not be the last time in our history that an opposition group is meeting with the diplomatic corps to explain or clarify its version or outlook on policy or events in our country.

Government must own up to its responsibilities and ensure the prosecution of the criminal elements who it deployed in Ayawaso West Wuogon. It is those actions that paint the country black internationally, not those who expose the dastardly acts sanctioned by government and its appointees.

In the public interest, let me share with you, one of the three main videos I showed at the Wednesday meeting with diplomats on the violence in Ayawaso West Wuogon. This, like the others, is a compilation available and shared widely by various media houses over the period.

275 ambulances procured by government to support quality health delivery system

0

All 275 constituencies in the country will soon receive an ambulance to facilitate a quality health delivery system.

The ambulances procured by the government are set to arrive in the country by the end of April 2019.

Currently, there are less than 100 functional ambulances operating in some parts of the country.

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, made the information known to the Daily Graphic on Saturday, February 16 2019.

Although he did not reveal the total cost of the vehicles, he said the vehicles were being funded from the $1 million per constituency the President pledged in his campaign in the run-up to the 2016 general election.

Dr Nsiah-Asare said a team of experts had already assessed the quality of the ambulances and certified them as being consistent with required specifications.

He remarked that the decision to purchase the specialized vehicles by the government formed part of a grand effort to transform the health sector to facilitate effective delivery of health care in the country.

For more than four years now some health facilities have been operating without ambulances.

Most of the ambulances acquired in the past have either broken down or cannot be used because they are not fit for purpose.

The situation has forced many people to resort to the use of either commercial or private vehicles as ambulances to convey injured or sick persons to hospitals during emergency.

Dr Nsiah-Asare who described the situation as unfortunate noted that as part of the government’s plan to transform the health delivery service in the country, the new fleet will start a new phase in the health sector.

He said the GHS would make sure that beneficiary health centres drew up comprehensive maintenance plans to ensure the durability of the ambulances.

10 expenses to cut down on to have a low-budget wedding

0

At least, once in every man/woman’s lifetime, they’d be event organizers or help in organizing an event— their wedding— if they ever plan to settle down. Planning a [your] wedding can sometimes be one hell of an experience, especially when vendors’ products/services can cost an arm and leg. Thanks to some platforms like the Ayefro App [check it out on App or Play Store] that brings together all event vendors for clients to choose those with the best rates and services, according to their budget.

If you’ve enough to put together a luxurious wedding, why not? If you don’t, however, you must be careful in your expenses. You shouldn’t sell your kidneys to have your wedding. Trust me, no one will remember how classy or boring your wedding was… a week after it has happened. So… give yourself a break!

In our bid to impress people, we sometimes dig our own graves. Everyone is happy at our wedding except us because we start our honeymoon as a bankrupt double. Drowning in countless debts after a wedding is a needless choice a couple makes because having a properly-planned, low-budget wedding is very possible.

There are two groups of people who are almost impossible to convince about anything; party foot soldiers and a couple who insist their wedding is a once-a-lifetime event, thus, don’t mind spending everything to make it memorable. I guess I didn’t write this with the latter in mind. Lol.

Food/Drinks

We all want to have a buffet at our weddings but it goes without saying that not everyone can afford it. If you are serious about having a prim, low-budget wedding, the first thing to cut down on is the number of invited guests. You will lose some good friends but, at least, you won’t lose your sanity. Remember that no matter how much you try, you can’t everybody to your wedding.

Cutting down your guest size automatically cuts down so many other expenses, especially food and drinks. Instead of a buffet, you can package well-sized pastries and meat for your guests. You can get your assorted drinks at wholesale rates with an estimate of your guest list in mind. And mind you, after your wedding, you’d always have complaints of people not getting served. We are in Africa!

Jewelry

You don’t need to buy jewelry at throat-cutting prices just because it’s your big day. Tell you what, most of these ornaments will hardly be seen by anyone. No one will know if your earrings are made of diamond or wood. No one will know the cost of your jewelries. Even if they would, who cares!?

I have seen some ladies walk away from relationships just because the man could not afford a particular type of ring or bracelet. Whether you wear a 24-carat gold ring on your wedding day or not, what really matters is the journey after that day. The jewelries are only symbols and tokens. What will sustain the marriage is the character of both spouses… not the jewelry type!

Gown

If you can afford an extremely flamboyant wedding gown, go for it. However, if you are intentional about keeping a simple budget, you must buy your gown with the fact that you can’t wear it anywhere after your wedding in mind. The groom’s tux can be worn over and over again but not the bride’s gown. It’s like buying a car that can be driven only once in your life. You won’t spend so much in buying that car.

Unless you’re going to rent out your gown intermittently, you must spend only little on it. If possible, have it hand sewn by a [your] local fashion designer.

Pair of shoes

It’s interesting to know that most of the things we spend so much on to impress people are not even seen by them. One of such is our pair of shoes. For the bride’s, her gown almost covers her feet and no one sees what’s down there.

Don’t wear a pair of shoes that are on life support to your wedding. That notwithstanding, needless to break your account to buy a pair of shoes either.

Decoration

Your wedding is your big day and it is understandable you want the venue to look delectable. However, you’d be amazed all the details you plan your decoration with will go unnoticed by many. Most may not know your wedding color was either beige or mauve. Many will not even know the wedding theme was that of Black Panther or Jamaican.

Let that decoration be spot on but spend within your means.

Photography/videography

In this age of social media, photography/videography has almost become the bulkiest part of the wedding budget of most couples about to walk down the aisle. These come in the form of pre-wedding, wedding and post-wedding shoots. Some of these services can cost, at least, GHC10,000 while others even quote their rates in dollars.

Keeping a low-budget means finding vendors who can give you a service that falls within your financial strength. Pictures age. Videos become old with time, too. Cut down on how much you spend on such.

Reception venue

Possibly, you can have your reception right at the church grounds. Renting a different space outside the church creates a lot of inconveniences to some guests, especially those who may not be driving their own cars. Aside all these inconveniences, it helps you save some money.

If you can have space to contain your guests in the church where you wed, go for it. It saves needless expenses.

Clothing bridesmaids/groomsmen and page boys/girls

If you want your friends to be on your bridal team, oftentimes, you must be prepared to clothe them because you may be crashing in on someone’s monthly budget. However, having a ‘tight’ budget means doing away with some of these expenses.

If you can’t do away with this bridal team, convince them to, at least, clothe themselves.

Bridal convoy

Get friends to use their cars as the bridal convoy. After all, what are friends for!? There’s nothing shameful about using what you have. Needless to rent a fleet of luxurious cars… only to be seen walking on foot a day later.

Hiring event organizers

Leaving your wedding in the hands of event organizers because of reasons best known to you is great. However, as much as possible, you must handle the organization of your own wedding. Aside the experience it gives you, it helps you save all that money you would have spent on over-priced goods/services of organizers.

If it’s an MC you need, save money. Get one of your eloquent friends to do it. They even know you better than any other person will. Courtesy technology (like Ayefro App), you can sit in the comfort of your home and reach out all vendors with little stress.

Always remember that no one will remember how awesome or boring your wedding was a week after it has passed. Thank God for forgetfulness.

The success of a marriage doesn’t depend on how little or big the wedding was. If you want to keep a low-budget, it is possible!
