MUSIGHA is the most useless organisation in Ghana – Willie and Mike

0

Gospel duo, Willie and Mike, has branded the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGHA) is the most ‘useless’ association ever formed in Ghana.

A member of the group, Mike, further accused MUSIGA of being supervised most corrupt leaders who have no interest in the welfare of musicians.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s ‘Ghana Nie’ with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu-Darkwah Embosuohemaa Friday the group said GHAMRO is more organized and responsive than MUSIGHA.

“MUSIGHA’s executives are really corrupt and they are nor running the organization well.  I pay my dues always but they fail to turn up at my Dad’s funeral. They always preach about the welfare of their members, but they don’t care about anybody; they are only interested in misusing funds", Mike fumed.

New KATH Maternity block shows Ghana beyond aid is possible – First Lady

0

First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has expressed confidence, that Ghanaians can build a dignified, self-sustaining country and shun the tag as a beggar nation.

She said the new Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Maternity block built entirely out of fundraising efforts is an example that the President’s mantra of Ghana beyond aid is possible.

Delivering a speech at the commissioning of the facility in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, she mentioned the numerous support the project received after fundraising efforts in Accra and Kumasi in 2017.

“…even children sent their contributions”, she revealed.

The Rebecca Foundation project started after a Joy News documentary revealed in March 2017, shocking rate of mortality at KATH partly due to overcrowding.

In the Joy News documentary ‘Next To Die’, a cot meant for one baby is shared by as many as eight newborns. A father testified after he lost two babies when his wife delivered at the hospital in 2013, 2014 and 2016 respectively.

“How did we as a country get here?”  Rebecca Akufo remembered her own outrage that joined in the national outpouring of indignation and shame.

“That was when I knew we needed to act”.

A KATH Maternity Block which began in 1974 had stalled for more than 40 years. It would cost more than $70m to furnish and furnish the more than a 1,000-bed facility.

The Rebecca Foundation found it pragmatic to build immediately a less costly 10million cedi facility.

She was happy that the “outpouring of indignation gave way to an outpouring of giving”.

The First Lady, ‘Second’ Lady Samira Bawumia and wife of Asantehene, Lady Julia joined in helping raise funds.

Two months after the March documentary, work on the new building began on May 29, 2017, courtesy the free services of African Builders Partners, a construction company.

After two inspections in October and later on December 9, 2017, the First Lady was chaffed.

“Now I need to confess this. What I saw was way beyond what I had imagined…it was simply overwhelming to see what all of us have done as a people in just five short months.”

Facing the “world-class” facility which is the only green hospital in Africa, Rebecca Akufo-Addo said; “Today is a happy day for us all. What we see here is in sharp contrast to the day the documentary was aired”.

“I stand here a fulfilled woman, I stand here a grateful mother, proud of my people.”

The commissioning was graced by wife of Asantehene, Lady Julia, the Batamahene and a host of traditional leaders in the region.

She proceeded to share some lessons she has learned from the concerted effort. The project she said made a strong impression on her that “we are better together…we are capable of solving our challenges.”

The First Lady urged Ghanaians to join in the President’s economic diplomacy of building Ghana beyond aid. “That’s the president’s dream, that is my dream and I dare say that it is everyone’s dreams too.”

She was full of praise for Joy News’ award-winning journalist, Seth Kwame Boateng, noting his documentary is a demonstration of the power of the media to promote unity and development.

” Multimedia, Seth Kwame Boateng you make us all proud”, she said. A citation from the KATH management was presented to the Multimedia journalist for being a “journalist with a difference”.

Seth Kwame Boateng citation

The First Lady expressed a strong desire to see the hospital manage the new maternity block properly and indicated her continued willingness to provide further support.

Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, revealed that after consultations with The Rebecca Foundation and traditional leaders, the KATH Mother and Baby Unit has been named Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II Center.

It was named after the late mother of the Ashanti King.

While the commissioning went on, President Nana Akufo-Addo tweeted his delight at the completion of the project and praised his wife.

Serial killer suspect 'killed nine in three weeks including his own mother'

0

A suspected serial killer shot and killed nine people, including his own mother, police believe.

Cleophus Cooksey Jr, 35, is accused of an array of killings in Arizona in three weeks during the closing months of last year.

Investigators say he shot dead seven men and two women in their homes, suburban apartment complexes, in a parked car or while outside between 27 November and 17 December.

The murder weapon in one of the attacks was the victim's own gun, they allege.

Officials in Phoenix, Glendale and Avondale say Cooksey, described as an aspiring musician, knew some of the victims.

But detectives are still trying to determine the motives in a few of the attacks.

The victims include Jesus Real, 25, the brother of Cooksey's ex-girlfriend.

He was asleep in his home in Avondale on 11 December when he was shot twice in the face.

Avondale police say Mr Real's sister and Cooksey had broken up the night before.

Another victim, Maria Villanueva, was seen arriving at a Glendale block of flats on 15 December and then leaving with an unknown man.

Her partially naked body was found in an alley in Phoenix the next morning and her car was found abandoned in Glendale.

Investigators found a mobile phone and a bloody man's shirt inside.

DNA on the shirt matched Cooksey's, according to court documents. The mobile phone was also confirmed to be his.

Cooksey was arrested on 17 December after allegedly shooting dead his mother and stepfather in their home.

He was initially charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of being a felon in possession of a weapon but he has now been arrested over the other seven murders.

Sgt Jonathan Howard, a Phoenix police spokesman, said: "It should appal every one of us in the room that he managed to kill nine people period, let alone in such a short period of three weeks."

Nurse gives homeless addict school friend a shop

0

A Kenyan nurse, whose appeal to help her childhood friend to get off drugs went viral, says she has bought him a shop for him to manage when he gets out of rehab:

Wanja Mwaura was working with a market near Kenya's capital Nairobi when she heard her name being called.

She looked up and was surprised to see a tall man with bulging eyes, an emaciated frame, dirtied black overalls and an equally stained thick woollen hat, sitting on the side of the road. She did not recognise him.

But when Patrick "Hinga" Wanjiru introduced himself, Wanja says she found herself in shock. Standing before her was a friend she had known since she was seven years old.

He said he was desperate to get off drugs and she put a request out on the internet for help to send him to rehab.

he says in her Facebook post that he is due to come out of rehab on 28 January.

But she has also managed to raise more money – to pay for a house and a shop.

She says he used to be a hawker – sometimes called mali mali in Kenya – so the shop will allow him to continue doing that.

We don’t have any dancehall king yet—D-Sky

0

The passion, energy, and enthusiasm with which he carries his talent and style of music would make him one of the top brands of the Dancehall music.

He is determined to take the Ghana music industry by far to places and further establish his superiority in the music game.

That is simply the amazing story of the Dancehall Emperor D-Sky, a multi-talented face of music now signed under Baby Cash Records.

Albert Nana Kofi Omar better known as D-Sky, whose role model is Vybz Kartel, started singing and writing his own songs at the age of 13.

In an exclusive interview, he controversially declared that Ghana is yet to produce anything called a Dancehall King so those desperate self-acclaimed Dancehall Kings should advise themselves.

“I am the next big deal in the dancehall game and trust me; I don’t see anybody competing with me. I am yet to see my match,” D-Sky said.

D-Sky will soon be promoting his new single dubbed ‘FA B3 TWI’ which was and produced by Barack and mixed and mastered by Beatz Da Kay.

According to the Dancehall Emperor D-Sky, his family and friends have been his strongest supporting partners and takes inspiration from Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, Bounty Killer, Shabba Ranks, among several others.

Way back 2004 and 2005, he wrote his first song titled Ajwoa and became the youngest artist to perform with Batman now known as Samini, Tinny, BukBak, Abrewa Nana and Okomfuor Kwaade at Roro’s Street Carnival.

In 2004, he had his second biggest show at Odorkor-Official Town, Addy Junction, where he shared the same stage with Terry Bonchaka.

A 17-year-old Junior High School pupil, Emmanuel Gyan, is in police custody for allegedly killing his mother over his missing mobile phone memory card.

Gyan is said to have hit his 52-year-old mother, Faustina Agyeiwaa several times in the head with a pestle until she fell down, and thereafter he followed up with naked flames in attempts to burn her.

The incident is said to have happened at Wassa J.Y No.1. in the Sefwi Wiawso district on Monday, January 15.

The Sefwi Wiawso Police, who are holding the murder suspect, told Graphic Online that Gyan was arrested and brought to the station by his biological father, Isaac Somuah, aged 58, assisted by one Stephen Amponsah.

Somuah and Amponsah told the police that Gyan had accused his mother of taking his memory card, which the mother denied.

They said Emmanuel became furious and started attacking the mother with a pestle by hitting her on the head several times until she died on the spot.

GJA: Dismissal of GBC boss unacceptable

0

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), is calling for the reinstatement of the sacked Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Dr. Kwame Akuffo Annof-Ntow.

Dr Annof-Ntow  was asked to proceed on leave last week  by the governing council of GBC, following the  controversy surrounding the establishment of special courts for defaulters of TV license.

However, in a statement, the GJA said  the action of the governing council was illegal.

It therefore urged  the NMC “to as a matter urgency, intervene in the developments at GBC and recall the Director-General from leave.

“In the circumstances, the acts of commission or omission of the Director-General in the discharge of his official duties do not by themselves strip the NMC of its constitutional authority in such respect; neither do they cloth the GBC Board or any other body with authority to do likewise,” the statement pointed out.

“By acting before officially consulting the NMC on this matter, as has been verified, the GBC Board appears to have put the cart before the horse. That is unacceptable because it has the potential to give our constitutional democracy, particularly the functions of the NMC a rough-ride,” the GJA said.

Below is the full statement:

GJA Calls For Recall Of GBC Director-General From Leave

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is dismayed by recent developments at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in which the Board of Directors has asked the Director-General, Dr Kwame Akuffo Anoff-Ntow, to proceed on leave over the TV license brouhaha.

The decision by the board has generated a lot of anxiety not only among staff of the national broadcaster, but also the general public.

After thorough investigation and appreciation of the issues at stake, the GJA believes the decision by the GBC Board was absolutely wrong because it does not wield the power to do so.

Article 168 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana vests the power to appoint the chairmen and other members of the governing bodies of the state-owned media in the National Media Commission (NMC).

By virtue of that constitutional mandate, the NMC is the only body seised with the power to alter the appointment of the chairmen and members of the governing bodies of the state-owned media.

In the circumstances, the acts of commission or omission of the Director-General in the discharge of his official duties do not by themselves strip the NMC of its constitutional authority in such respect; neither do they cloth the GBC Board or any other body with authority to do likewise.

Similarly, the GJA does not think it is within the realm of the GBC Board to appoint an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to perform the functions of the Director-General.

That amounts to usurpation of the NMC’s constitutional mandate. By acting before officially consulting the NMC on this matter, as has been verified, the GBC Board appears to have put the cart before the horse.

That is unacceptable because it has the potential to give our constitutional democracy, particularly the functions of the NMC a rough-ride.

In the light of the foregoing, the GJA appeals to the NMC to, as a matter of urgency, intervene in the developments at GBC and recall the Director-General from leave.

The NMC, as an independent constitutional body, has the prerogative to take its own decisions and “shall not be subject to the direction or control of any person or authority in the performance of its functions”, as provided in Article 172 of the 1992 Constitution.

The GJA calls for calm at GBC in the face of the current developments and urges management and staff of the state broadcaster to focus on its core business of serving the interests of the state.

It is our fervent belief that the dust will soon settle on the matter.

I played in the UAE and China to guarantee my future – Asamoah Gyan

0

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan says he does not regret moving to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Pro-League at age 26 and later to the Chinese Super League with Shanghai SIPG in 2015 because he did so to guarantee his future financially.

Gyan has been criticised by pundits for abandoning top-flight European football for money after his sensational loan switch to UAE Pro-League club Al Ain in 2011 from English Premier League club Sunderland when he was arguably at the height of his powers.

However, the 32-year-old says he does not agree with his critics describing them as "Professors of every job".

According to Gyan who has gone on to become the Black Stars record scorer with 51 goals in 105 appearances, he decided to move to Al Ain at the age of 26 and later Shanghai SIPG because he wanted to guarantee his life and future.

Gyan who was on a reported salary of £227,000 per week at Shanghai SIPG explain

"Obviously, I do not agree with these criticisms, everyone thinks of themselves as Professors of every job, but nobody knows what you are going to do, of course, the team that I will go to is important, but we are human beings … doesn't everyone work for money? There were so many differences between the offered wages and my family, I guaranteed my life and my future.

"If you leave football you have a few sentences about you but nobody knows what you are going to do. It is my life, I chose this. I have done very good work in the places I went to. China, I played in France, England and Italy before Dubai and I do not regret the decisions I have made in my life."

He also gave his approval to the decision of Congolese striker Cedric Bakambu, who at age 26 is making a similarly lucrative transfer by joining the Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan which will incidentally make him the most expensive African player in history when he pens a bumper £16m-a-year contract in China's capital city.

Bakambu has already undergone his medical with the £65m deal set to be finalised. Beijing Guoan have not only agreed to pay the £35m release clause for the Congolese striker but also all the imposed tax on the star – which will total around £30m.

"Bakambu did very well in Spain and was 26 years old, and was offered a figure of 18 million euros a year and now he is gone. Are you going to raise your career or to guarantee that you will be financially secure?".

He also revealed that over 20 clubs wanted to sign him before he joined Turkish SuperLig club Kayserispor last July.

Gyan who was then a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Shanghai SIPG told the Anadolu News Agency that he received offers from numerous European clubs including Bursaspor before signing a two year deal with the Anatolian Stars as Kayserispor is known.

"I got offers from Turkey before Kayserispor. Over 20 managers called me. It was Kayserispor who convince me. The first half of the season was unlucky for me but I'm working very hard for the second half.

"Our team did a very good job in the first half. We have a very good technical director, a good understanding of tactics, a very important place thanks to him, we have a great president, they have supported me since the day I arrived, I have a saying, I can be a very easy hero but what is important to me is not how you started, but how it ends. "Some things are too early to talk, see how I finish, not how I begin."
