Renowned Ghanaian musician Micheal Adangba has called for the establishment of a national day dedicated to celebrating highlife music and honouring musicians who have contributed to the development of the genre.
Speaking in an interview with Babiee Dappah on Atinka TV‘s Klub 99, Adangba said highlife was more than a music genre, describing it as an important part of Ghana’s cultural identity and heritage.
“Ghanaians are supposed to organise a day to celebrate highlife and recognise highlife musicians,” he said.
According to Adangba, a dedicated national celebration would help preserve Ghana’s musical heritage and ensure that the contribution of highlife pioneers is not forgotten.
He expressed concern that younger generations could lose touch with the origins of Ghanaian popular music if greater efforts were not made to promote and preserve the genre.
He said a national highlife day could also provide an opportunity to honour veteran musicians whose work laid the foundation for contemporary Ghanaian music.
Adangba further suggested that the celebration could educate young musicians about the history and cultural significance of highlife and encourage them to appreciate the roots of their craft.
He said formal recognition of highlife would help keep the genre relevant while preserving its place in Ghana’s cultural history.
