The Executive Secretary for Importers and Exporters Association, Sampson Asaki Awingobet, says the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) doesn’t have the capacity to meet the local demands as claimed.
According to Sampson Asaki Awingobet, contrary to claims of locally producing all products, most members of the AGI import to augment what they produce.
This statement comes after the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) issued a notice cautioning that Ghanaians may buy Christmas goods at much higher prices in December this year.
According to GUTA, Goods including food items like cooking oil, rice, sugar, second-hand clothing, and frozen foods, as well as non-food items such as Christmas trees, ribbons, and balloons for decorations are mostly imported by members of GUTA.
After the notice from GUTA, David Adikah, a former Executive Member for the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) noted that the prices of goods will fall if the general over dependence on imported goods is reduced.

Reacting to the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Sampson Asaki Awingobet said some members of the AGI import finished products and claim to have the capacity to meet local demands.
According to Sampson Asaki Awingobet, the AGI is not well equipped to meet the local demands as widely claimed.
“We will not allow AGI to lie to Ghanaians. You can quote me anywhere, some members of the AGI import finished products into the country, change the labels and come and preach to us that they have the capacity. If you have the capacity, what stops you from producing?”, he quizzed.
