The Tobinco Media Group (TMG) has assured its staff and viewers that the introduction of Ghana’s first AI newscaster will not lead to layoffs.
According to Managing Director Odelia Ntiamoah Boampong, the new AI anchor, Margaret Tobbin, has been created to support human presenters, not replace them.
Boampong emphasized that the AI system is meant to step in when presenters face biological or family-related challenges that traditionally force women, especially, to miss work.
“It is supposed to augment and support the team,” she explained, noting that the AI can handle minor bulletins when a presenter is unavailable or on assignment.
The announcement formed part of celebrations marking Bullet TV’s first anniversary. Named after the late mother of TMG’s Executive Chairman, Elder Samuel Amo Tobbin, the AI newscaster represents the role of a “good mother”—one who steps in to help without threatening anyone’s place.
Boampong highlighted that the launch positions Bullet TV as the first media house in Ghana, and among the first globally, to use AI for visual newscasting. While proud of the innovation, she stressed that language limitations, especially in local dialects, ensure human newscasters remain indispensable.
As the station enters its second year, TMG plans to expand its programming to include women-in-business features, rural reports, diplomatic content, and enhanced event services.
Boampong said the anniversary marks “the beginning of exciting times” as the network pushes further into innovation and audience-focused content.
