Akufo-Addo running ‘family and friends’ government- Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama also accused President Akufo Addo of running a government of “family and friends”.

Mr. Mahama, who was addressing sympathizers of the National Democratic Congress on Saturday, during the party’s ninth Unity Walk, held on the grounds of the St. Johns Park in Bolgatanga, said President Akufo Addo has loaded his government with appointments of relatives and friends.

“When they are out of government, even when you are not doing family and friends, they say it is a family and friends government. When they come into government, they appoint all their relatives into government and when you talk, they tell you it doesn’t matter it’s whether they are qualified. Who doesn’t have relatives who are qualified? I have plenty relatives who are qualified who could have served in my government. But the fact that you are the president does not mean you can load your government with your relatives,” he stressed.

On the performances of government, the former President described the strategy being employed in governing the country as “government as you go”. He said government was using strategies his government had tried before in the fight against galamsey but did not work.

He tasked government to instead, find alternative sources of livelihood for people who engage in illegal mining popularly known as galamsey while it advances with the fight against the illegal practice.

He said the NDC is forever ready and will continue to give suggestions to government. He urged government to do a rethink of some of the sensitive statutory funds which he said have suffered greatly and are unable to perform adequately due to the diversion  of funds into the consolidated fund.

Mr. Mahama ended his speech with the hint that he will soon announce his political future as the NDC prepares to elect a flagbearer to lead the party in the 2020 poll.

He thanked sympathizers of the NDC and called on all to join forces to enable the party come out victorious in Election 2020.

The Volta region is the next and last stop of the NDC Unity walk.
