Anlo State yet to announce Rawlings' death – Spokesperson

Spokesperson for the Anlo kingdom, Togbe Agbotadua Kumasa,  says the Anlo state is yet to announce the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings to the general public.

Former President of the Republic of Ghana and founder of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jerry John Rawlings, died after battling a short illness.

Jerry John Rawlings died at the Korlebu Teaching Hospital Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 73.

Following the demise of the statesman, President Akufo-Addo issued an official statement announcing the death of JJ Rawlings.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the tragic event occurred at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital, where the former president was receiving treatment after a short illness.

He further declared seven days of national mourning from Friday 13th November to Friday 20th November and directed that all NPP campaigns be suspended

Reacting to issues surrounding the death of the former President on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, spokesperson for the Anlo kingdom, Togbe Agbotadua Kumasa, said Rawlings was a chief until his demise and that the announcement of a chief’s death is done traditionally.

Former president Jerry John Rawlings was installed “Torgbuiga Nutifafa Fia” for the entire Anlo State in 2016. The installation was done  at a mini Hogbetsotso Festival of the Anlo State at Tadzewu of Afife Traditional Area.

According to Togbe Agbotadua Kumasa, the Anlo State will perform some rituals and then announce the death of the former President to the world.

“ As it stands. Rawlings is not dead traditionally. In our land, when a chief dies, it is not announced immediately because there are certain rituals to be performed. Rawlings was installed Nutifafa Fia and so his death should follow certain protocols, but that was not done and so we are yet to announce his death to the world. All that you heard were mere announcement”, he said.
