Anti-Galamsey Operations: GNASSM Alleges Extortion, Harassment by Influential Figures

The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) has raised alarm over alleged acts of extortion and harassment by some members of the security task force mandated to clamp down on illegal mining activities, widely known as galamsey.

Addressing the media in Kumasi, GNASSM’s National Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abdul Razak Alhassan, called on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to uphold professionalism, accountability, and integrity within the police service, particularly among officers deployed in anti-galamsey operations.

He cited disturbing instances of alleged misconduct, including the arbitrary seizure of excavators that were legally owned and parked outside active mining areas. According to him, these actions are not only undermining the credibility of the task force but also creating opportunities for corruption.

Mr. Razak further called for a well-defined and transparent operational mandate to guide law enforcement agencies in their dealings with the small-scale mining sector. He emphasized that clarity in operational protocols would safeguard the rights of licensed miners while ensuring accountability in enforcement.

GNASSM, he said, is advocating for a more collaborative and educational approach in tackling illegal mining—one that combines enforcement with engagement and public awareness.

The association has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting government efforts to eliminate illegal mining but insists that any success must come through lawful and transparent means that respect the rights of all stakeholders.
