A curfew on motorbike operations has been imposed across parts of the Ashanti Region following the fatal shooting of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenge, Chief of Kusaase, at Asawase.
The new directive, announced by the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), bans all motorbike activity after 7:00pm each evening until further notice.
The measure is part of a broader security response to rising tensions after the killing, which has shocked the community and sparked calls for justice.
Additional restrictions include a ban on the use of unlicensed motorbikes and motorcycles without lights, as well as a prohibition on motorbike riders wearing smocks—clothing security officials say has been used to conceal weapons by suspected assailants.
The Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, in a statement , expressed the Council’s condolences to the family of the late chief and pledged the government’s commitment to restoring calm and order.
“The perpetrators of this heinous act will be brought to justice,” he stated, adding that the Regional Coordinating Council is working closely with security agencies to investigate the incident.
As a further precaution, the ongoing inter-tribal football competition in the area has been suspended with immediate effect.
Security personnel, including both police and military officers, have been deployed to hotspot areas to ensure public safety and prevent further violence.
REGSEC is urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. The public is also encouraged to provide credible information that may assist in apprehending those responsible for the chief’s death.
The late Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenge was a respected community leader whose sudden death has cast a shadow over Asewase and surrounding communities. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
