Atinka FM’s AM Drive storms Lapaz; engages “second-hand” dealers

Atinka FM’s morning show, “AM Drive,” was held live from Lapaz in Accra today, Friday, January 27, 2023.

The show has been held in various Accra locations over the last few days to deepen engagements with residents from various communities.

Lapaz as the choice of location for today’s Atinka FM’s AM Drive is in line with the contention over the government’s decision to ban the importation of used appliances into the country, considering the fact that Lapaz is a hub for the sale of second-hand appliances in Accra.

This in in line with the decision of the Concerned Second Hand Dealer Association to protest plans by government to ban the importation of used appliance into the country.

The group has argued that the decision has the tendency to affect their livelihood, particularly under the current economic situation.

Speaking at a press conference, President of the Association, Asare Daniel, revealed that the ban will take away jobs that feed millions of people, forgetting the contribution of the group to Ghana’s GDP.

“Now that there is economic hardship all over the world, why would one say they are taking away jobs that feed millions of people in this country, forgetting our contribution to Ghana’s GDP?” Asare Daniel said.

In an interview with the host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Lawrence Adutwum, vice president of the Concerned Second-Hand Dealers Association, insisted that they should have been consulted before the decision to ban the importation of used appliances was conceived.

“If the sitting government is seeking assistance from the IMF, which will prevent them from employing workers, where would they find jobs for us and the graduates in our homes due to the government’s inability to get jobs for them?” “We are disappointed that the government and the Energy Commission did not consult us before conceiving the decision to ban the importation of used appliances,” Lawrence Adutwum added.
