The General Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Justice Yankson, says the association will not shield any of the medical doctors arrested in connection with the baby selling scandal.
The statement by the GMA comes after a joint team by the Medical And Dental Council and Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) have arrested over 11 people involved in ‘baby harvesting’ and human trafficking in Accra.
A statement by the team revealed that On Thursday, December 31, 2020, Dr Hope Mensah Quashie who works with the 37 Military Hospital was arrested at his private health facility named Susan Clinic located at Lartebiokorshie, a suburb of Accra.
“He allegedly sold the first baby boy to the team for an amount of Thirty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC30,OOO.OO) in October, 2020. He was arrested with three nurses who worked at his facility namely Sylvia Awuseh, John Adorey Effie and Angela Ametepe,” a joint statement from the team said.
According to the statement, EOCO and Medical And Dental Council have also arrested one Dede Gifty Anikpi, who is an accomplice and a traditional birth attendant at Bethlehem Maternity Home at Santoe, a suburb of Kpone Katamanso, who referred the mother of the first baby to Susan Clinic.
Speaking on Arinka TV’s super morning show “Ghana Nie” with host Teacher Nkrumah, The General Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Justice Yankson explained that the Medical profession is a noble one and that the association will will not condone such “illegal” behaviours from any member of the association.
“We as Ghana Medical Association always tell our members that we are a noble association. We will not hesitate to hand over any member who flouts any law of the country. We will let the law deal with you just like any other citizen. We just hope that everybody will be given a fair hearing in accordance with the rule of law,” he added.
