Bawku quiet after imposition of curfew

Bawku

Administrative works and businesses at Bawku in the Upper East Region have come to a standstill due to a curfew imposed on the town.

On Wednesday, November 23, 2021, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) placed a curfew on the town due to a clash between two families over the funeral rights of their Chief who died about two years ago.

All persons were instructed to sleep by 4 p.m. and wake up 6 a.m.

Aside that, the wearing of smock was also banned in the town because according to REGSEC, some criminals or unscrupulous elements hide arms and ammunition in the smocks and attack opponents or innocent civilians.

Giving details of what is happening in Bawku on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Nurudeen Ibrahim, Atinka TV’s Upper East Regional Correspondent said the town was quiet following the announcement of curfew.

” If you look at businesses and administrative work in Bawku, I can say they have come to a standstill now,” he said.

Nurudeen Ibrahim confirmed that the clash was caused by some residents over who was the right person to perform rituals before the final funeral rights of the late Chief which was expected to take place next week.

Already, two clans have installed two chiefs at Bawku, a situation that caused confusion for about two years.

He explained that although the clash has been happening for about three weeks, with both clans attacking each other, the police did not intervene early.

However, upon noticing that the clash had become severe, they then intervened, after which the curfew was placed.

“The fight has been going on for about three weeks. The police did not come in early but yesterday they realised that the way things are going if they leave the people, there will be

bloodshed by the time they do the final funeral rites

Speaking on the ban on smock, Nurudeen Ibrahim said only chiefs are allowed to wear it in their Palace and not outside.

Meanwhile, he said the curfew will continue until further notice since REGSEC did not state the period of which it should last.
