BECE: WAEC to handover examination offenders to Police

Head of Legal Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Rev. Victor Brew, says the Council will handover some offenders arrested for indulging in examination malpractice in the ongoing BECE to the Police.

This statement by Rev. Victor Brew, comes after some security persons of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), in collaboration with the National Security arrested some 12 persons for examination malpractice  in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The offenders were picked up at different examination centers in the Ashanti and Bono Regions respectively.

Speaking in an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Head of Legal Affairs at the West African Examinations Council, Rev. Victor Brew noted that a teacher of the Offinso State ‘A’ Junior High School (JHS) was arrested after he was caught collecting money from the candidates while distributing the Social Studies answer booklets.

He noted that when the teacher was questioned she admitted to collecting the money but denied that the monies were for examination malpractice and that that the money was contributed to her for free.

According to Rev. Victor Brew, the other 10  were arrested including a headmaster, were arrested at the Dwamena Akenten M/A JHS examination centre and Senase R/C Basic School centre some were spotted solving the objective part of the Social Studies paper in the morning.

The invigilator at Senase R/C Basic School centre was also caught taking shots of the Social Studies paper and sending the snapshots to a friend to solve for him.

“We have arrested some 12 examination offenders and they are to be handed over to the Police. Beyond that, we are still working in other areas that we wouldn’t want to disclose. We are working hard to ensure that this year’s BECE goes smoothly as planned. We assure you that WAEC is not going to run away from the battle, we will continue to fight to ensure that such examination malpractices become a thing of the past,” Head of Legal Affairs at the West African Examinations Council, Rev. Victor Brew told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.

He reiterated WAEC’s determination to help rid the system of persons dwindling the efforts of the examination body.
