Bring Captain Smart to order-GJA, GIBA, PRINPAG tell Media General

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) and the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and the New Media Association have called on the Management of Media General to immediately sanction its presenter, Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as ‘Captain Smart’ over unethical behaviours displayed

The Coalition made the call at a joint Press conference held in Accra on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour observed that over the weekend,  Captain Smart made some disturbing and reckless comments on Accra-based Onua TV.

Captain Smart is said to have described as ‘beasts,’ people who would vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December elections.

Giving the severity of his utterances and the ethical breach, the Coalition through the GJA President called on the Board and Management of Media General, to take immediate action to mete out appropriate sanctions to Captain Smart.

That, Mr. Dwumfour said will not only serve as a deterrent to others but will enhance public confidence in the media organisation, as an organisation that detests unprofessional conduct.

“Giving the severity of his utterances and the ethical breach, we call on the Board and Management of Media General, to take immediate action to mete out appropriate sanctions to Mr. Smart. This will not only serve as a deterrent to others, but will enhance public confidence in the media organisation, as an organization that detests unprofessional conduct,” Mr. Dwumfour stated.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the Coalition, he also condemned all unethical and reckless media practice by any journalist or media practitioner.

“In this regard, we wish to remind and caution all journalists, media practitioners and media organisations that the extent to which the GJA, GIBA and PRINPAG, together with the MFWA and the New Media Association, can defend media freedoms is very much dependent on how professionally and responsibly journalists, media practitioners and media organisations carry out their dutie.
