Car sellers Assoc. threaten demonstration over luxury Vehicle levy  

 

Vehicle and Assets Dealers Association of Ghana has threatened to embark on a demonstration to express their displeasure in the new luxury vehicle levy.

Finance Minister, Ofori Atta presenting the 2018 mid-year budget review July 19, 2018 announced government’s decision to implement a luxury vehicle levy.

Mr. Ofori Atta mentioned that after the implementation of the levy, all imported luxurious cars with 3.0 litres engine capacity and above will attract between GHS1000 and GHS2000 levy.

He, however, stated that commercials vehicles will be exempted. Parliament has passed the bill and the implementation of the levy is effective August 1.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday August 1, 2018, President for the Vehicle and Assets Dealers Association of Ghana, Eric Kweku Boateng mentioned that the luxury car levy will not help the country in any way.

According to him, the levy, which is effective today, will affect their business and discourage people from patronizing some type of cars.

“We want the government to withdraw the tax or we will demonstrate on the streets of Accra with our members”, he fumed.

Tractors, ambulances, commercial vehicles that carry more than 10 people as well as vehicles which solely transports goods are however exempted from the levy.
