Central Region Chiefs dedicate institutions, others as quarantine centers

Central Region Chiefs have accepted to allow the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to use every area or institution in the region as a quarantine or isolation center.
The decision follows a stakeholder consultative forum organised by the Regional House of Chiefs in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service in Cape Coast on the coronavirus pandemic and its associated issues.
Irate youth and some traditional authorities within the Central Region had kicked against the use of Secondary Schools as quarantine centers to manage suspected Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients.
They chanted war songs and blocked the main roads leading to Secondary Schools to prevent Ghana Health Service (GHS) from using such schools as quarantine centers.
The chiefs observed that politicians have taken chiefs for granted, thinking that “chiefs are only there to grace occasions”.
The President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs, Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI, in a speech read on behalf of the house, stated that his colleague chiefs strongly believe that the fight against the Coronavirus cannot be left to the government and GHS alone but all, including the active involvement of chiefs.
According to him, directives have been sent to all traditional areas in the Central Region to suspend all social gatherings, festivals, funerals and religious activities to assist the government to fight the pandemic.
“We Nananom believe that without a strong and healthy society, our nation cannot progress” Obrempong Krampah hinted.
The Central Regional House of Chiefs welcomed the Central Regional Health Directorate’s decisions to provide food and security for the suspected Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients to avoid roaming in the community.
Obrempong Krampah therefore calmed down the community members to welcome Ghana Health Service’s decisions to use some places for quarantine camps since their lives will be 100% protected by the policemen.
On her part, the Central Regional Health Director, Dr. Mrs. Akosua Agyeiwaa Owusu blamed the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) for refusing to approach the chiefs about the usage of the quarantine centers.
She stated that the engagement were not done well by the MMDCEs who are the best persons to inform the chiefs after the GHS, Ghana Education Service(GES) planned to use public schools for quarantine centers.
