Ghanaians have expressed disappointment in members of the Appointments Committee following the chaos caused over the vetting of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
On Thursday, January 30, 2025, there was tension between Minority and Majority members over the vetting of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa resulting in chaos.
This was after the nominee for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe had been vetted around 10 pm.
According to reports, the minority proposed postponing the vetting to Friday, citing concerns about the day’s proceedings but the majority on the other hand rejected the proposal.
They insisted on the continuation of the vetting process, considering the fact that the aforementioned nominees had their people coming in and sitting long hours to wait for their nominee to be vetted.
Again, the Majority accused the Ranking Member, Alexander Afenyo Markin of spending more time on nominees hence the delay.
However, Afenyo Markin was of the firm view that he has to ask his questions in line with the practice of the committee where the Ranking Member has an unlimited number of questions.
This escalated, plunging the whole vetting into chaos.
While some of the ‘HONOURABLE‘ Members of Parliament were seen dropping chairs on the tables, others were seen dragging tables with microphones on them while others continued to argue.
Due to this, some of the microphones were destroyed.
Amidst the chaos, the security personnel were called to put the MPs in order, bringing to halt the vetting process.
You may recall a similar thing happened in parliament on Thursday dawn, January 7, 2021, when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus rejected a decision by the Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah, to prevent the Member of Parliament (MP) elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson from taking part in processes for the selection of a Speaker for the House.
The drama unfolded after the Clerk indicated that he cannot recognize Mr. Quayson as a member for parliamentary business and the selection of Speaker owing to the restraining order from the Cape Coast High Court.
After the Clerk’s ruling, the leader of the NDC Caucus in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu demanded to see the said court document served on the Clerk of Parliament barring the Assin North from the day’s proceedings.
Many of the MPs on the NDC side were later seen rushing to the Clerk’s lobby in protest of the Chairman’s decision.
While Ghanaians were unhappy about the situation and prayed it does not reoccur, a similar thing has happened again and this has put Ghanaians into a state of disappointment.
According to Ghanaians, the Honourable Members have lost their honourability and have brought disgrace on the country over this kind of attitude.
Meanwhile, the vetting on Friday Morning has continued regardless of what occurred on Thursday night.
