Consider rate of accidents caused by motorbikes before its legalisation-DSP Obeng

The Director in charge of Education and Training of the MTTD, DSP Alexander K. Obeng has asked political parties to critically consider the surge in road accidents caused by motorbikes before legalising the okada business.

The legalisation of use of motorbikes for commercial purposes has come under serious scrutiny by the public after the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) announced that it will legalise the okada business when given another opportunity to come back to power come December 7.

Although government maintains its position that using motorbikes for commercial purposes, except for courier services cannot be legalised in Ghana, some members of the NPP-government have also been for its legalisation.

But speaking about the issue on Atinka TV’s Flagship morning show, Ghana Nie with Adwoa Mirekua Ampomah, DSP Obeng noted that motorbikes have killed a lot of people in Ghana althoiugh it is the least of vehicles on the road, therefore the need to be critical about its legalistion.

“About 712 have lost their lives to motor bikes as at September this year, more than private vehicles, more than commercial vehicles although they are fewer, this indicates that there is a gap we should not overlook. people are dying, motor bikes are killing people. We should be very particular about this as a state. Because although motor bikes are not more than cars, it appears that every years it kills more people,” he said.
