Covid-19: Plans by gov’t to procure vaccines in order – GMA

General Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Justice Yankson, says plans by government to procure covid-19 vaccines for use in Ghana is in order.

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, addressing the general public in the 20th Covid-19 update, called for full compliance of the COVID-19 safety protocols ahead of the festive season.

He mentioned that that generally, the compliance of the Covid-19 safety protocols have reduced.

“I urge all of us to err on the side of caution. If you’ve to host social gatherings this festive season, the science suggests it is best to do so outdoors with all Covid protocols observed”, he said.

Commenting on the Covid-19 vaccine, Akufo-Addo noted that Government  will ensure covid vaccines come to Ghana and that there will be measures to ensure the vaccines are safe.

This assurance by the president follows the approval of Moderna by the US government as the country’s second Covid-19 vaccine, clearing the way for millions of doses to be released.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorised the US-made jab about a week after approving a Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine which is now being distributed.

Speaking to sit-in-host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, General Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Justice Yankson noted that the covid-19 pandemic has brought hardship to economies over the world.

He explained that the scientific world and the pharmaceutical community have really helped with research into vaccines to help minimize the spread of the coronavirus.

“When it comes to vaccines, every country cannot take up the hurdle of producing its own vaccine. US and UK have authorized the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and the Moderna vaccine and tests for their efficacy has already begun. Ghana has not begun the testing, but once the testing has begun in humans, at this point we can say that it may be safe for  human use. And so the decision to procure the vaccine by to be use to protect the country against the virus is in order”, he added.
