The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says his party will not give the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential candidate any chance to win the 2024 general election.
According to him, a president who lost his bid for reelection twice ought to be barred from entering the executive branch.
He made reference to himself, John Agyekum Kuffuor, and former president Jerry John Rawlings, all of whom served two terms as president of Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo made this statement while speaking during the unveiling of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Dr Bawumia’s running mate at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi today July 9, 2024.
According to President Akufo-Addo, Mr. Mahama should not be allowed to serve another term as president.
“We will not allow him,” Akufo-Addo added.
Earlier at an event at the Manhyia Palace, Tuesday, July 9, Mr Akufo-Addo noted that he can vouch for Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh and Dr Bawumia’s hard work and qualities.
“I have trust and confidence in the two of them to do the work. I have worked with the two and I know that they can do. I know that on the 7th of December when Ghanaians have given them the mandate they will work to meet the expectations of Ghana,” he said.
The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on July 4, 2024 unanimously endorsed the Presidential Candidate’s nomination of Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Energy Minister, as his Vice-Presidential Candidate.
The endorsement of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was announced by the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justine Kodua, at a press conference Thursday, July 4, 2024.
He noted that this significant milestone marks the completion of the presidential ticket of the NPP for the 2024 general elections, and therefore, sets the stage for the party to fully engage the Ghanaian electorates comprehensively with our message of transformation.
Justine Kodua explained that the synergy between these two great leaders on our presidential ticket, coupled with their proven track-record and transformational campaign message would help the New Patriotic Party to secure a resounding third consecutive electoral victory on the 7th of December 2024, by the grace of God.
“The National Council of the NPP, which is the second highest decision-making body of the party met today, July 4, 2024, to consider the nomination of Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh by H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s Presidential Candidate, as his Running Mate for the 2024 general elections. The meeting, which ended a few minutes ago, did in fact, consider the said nomination which forms part of the constitutionally mandated processes for selecting the party’s Running Mate as per Article 13(3)(1) of the NPP Constitution.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Article 13(3)(1) of the Constitution provides as follows: ‘’The Party’s Presidential Candidate shall, in consultation with the National Council, nominate the Vice-Presidential Candidate”.
“I am happy to report that after the necessary consideration, the National Council of the party UNANIMOUSLY ENDORSED the Presidential Candidate’s nomination of Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Energy Minister, as his Vice-Presidential Candidate pursuant to Article 13(3) of the Party Constitution,” General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justine Kodua told press men.
