The Chief of Adubiase near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, Nana Oguahyia Oduro Panin, has asked parents not to involve children in mining activities as the Community Mining Project (CMP) takes off in the area.
The CMP is part of efforts by government to replace illegal mining operation known as ‘galamsey’ due to its negative consequences on the environment.

The inauguration of the CMP by government in the area on Friday means the youth of Akyease, Abadwan, Adumanu and surrounding communities in the Adansi North District can now undertake their mining operations without the usual harassment from security agencies.

But the Chief of the area, Nana Oguahyia Oduro Panin is warning of possible child neglect and abuse by parents as they embark on the mining activities.
He has asked community members to allow children of school going age to be in school.
‘We do not want this to happen in this community, let the children be in school while parents focus on their mining’, he stated.

The Chief also wants government to provide potable water, toilet and health facilities as a measure to safeguard residents against any possible repercussions of the mining activities.
The Minister for Environment Science Technology and Innovation, professor Frimpong Boating said the CMP is a sustainable way of mining adding, ‘about 90% of the operation is carried out underground by breaking rocks, which does not affect water bodies as in the case of galamsey’.
