“E-levy can’t be repealed easily” – MP tells Mahama

The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Lawyer Appiah Kubi, says the controversial e-levy cannot be abolished easily like former President Mahama is insinuating.

This statement by the lawmaker who is also a lawyer comes after former President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, stated that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration will abolish the controversial e-levy.

The e-levy started on Sunday May 1 2022.

Government approved the E-levy despite a walkout staged by the Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) side.

Delivering an address titled “Ghana at Crossroad” on Monday May 2, John Dramani Mahama noted that a new NDC government, God willing and with the votes of the sovereign people of Ghana – in 2025 – will repeal the E-Levy Act.

“We in the NDC do not oppose taxation as a principle. We will not be pretentious and couch fanciful slogans to condemn the principle of taxation like the NPP did in the past. We are, however, implacably opposed to distortionary and burdensome taxes like the e-levy that only force Ghanaians to endure more suffering.

“A new National Democratic Congress Government, God willing and with the votes of the sovereign people of Ghana – in 2025 – will repeal the E-Levy Act,” he said while delivering an address titled “Ghana at Crossroad” on Monday May 2.

Speaking to host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Lawyer Appiah Kubi noted that it will be difficult to scrap the E-levy as Mahama is promising.

He asked Mahama to speak on situations he has control over and not build castles in the Air.

“Mahama says he will come and repeal the E-levy. First and foremost, will he come? Repealing a law goes through a process, does he control the entirety of the process? The E-levy can’t be repealed easily. The NDC and Mahama have a track record of not fulfilling promises. When the talk time tax was introduced by Kufour, Mahama promised to reverse it but he could not. Clearly, he is just focused on winning power”, he told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.
