The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen has testified that transacting business through mobile money is safer and more secure, encouraging Ghanaians to use the service.

His advice follows the commencement of the E-Levy deductions.

The E-levy was passed on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 in Parliament.

On Sunday, May 1st 2022, the deduction of the E-levy took effect.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Nana Obiri Boahen, urged the public not to be petty about the monies being deducted under the E-levy.

He took notice of the fact some market women were robbed on their way to purchase tomatoes at Burkina Faso, advising the public to keep their monies on their phones instead of carrying it on them.

“When you send money through momo, it is safe and secure. Last three weeks some women were going to Burkina Faso to purchase tomatoes, robbers attacked them and took their monies. Even though the E-Levy is tax, if you send money and they deduct you, it is still secured. Imagine taking about GHC10,000 and putting it on you from Kumasi to Accra, it is not safe,” he said.

Nana Obiri Boahen continued that, “Whether foreign transactions are being deducted or not, it is a way government is generating revenue, so if all of us want to be sincere with our country Ghana, we should not be so petty about the E-levy. I do not accept it because I am NPP, I accept it because it is a way the government will collect money to develop the country.”

“I am expecting our Parliament, Ghanaians, intellectuals to tell government that we have accepted the e-levy and that every three months, give us full details of how much MTN made or how much Vodafone made. This is transparency. But if you say that when you come to power, you will cancel the E-Levy, please, we need to be honest and sincere,” he stressed.
