PURC

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% upward adjustment in electricity tariffs for all consumer categories, effective July 1, 2025. This change comes as part of the Commission’s regular quarterly review process, conducted every three months to ensure the financial sustainability of utility service providers.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 25, the PURC indicated that the tariff review was guided by its Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism. This framework takes into account key economic indicators such as the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate, inflation, natural gas prices, and the energy generation mix between hydro and thermal sources.

Water Tariffs Remain Unchanged

While electricity tariffs are set to rise, the Commission confirmed that water tariffs will remain unchanged for the third quarter of the year. The PURC cited a commitment to easing the financial pressure on consumers while maintaining service quality.

Key Economic Indicators Influencing the Adjustment:

  • Exchange Rate: GHS10.3052 to the US dollar
  • Inflation: Projected annual average of 20.67%
  • Natural Gas Price: USD7.7134 per MMBtu
  • Power Generation Mix: 28.8% hydro, 71.2% thermal
  • Outstanding Utility Revenue: GHS488 million carried over from previous periods

Revised Electricity Tariffs (Effective July 1, 2025):

  • Lifeline Customers (0–30 kWh): From 77.6274 to 79.5308 GHp/kWh
  • Residential (301+ kWh): From 232.3892 to 238.0873 GHp/kWh
  • Non-Residential (301+ kWh): From 197.3338 to 202.1723 GHp/kWh
  • High Voltage Mines: From 495.9255 to 508.0854 GHp/kWh

Service charges across all consumer categories remain unchanged.

PURC’s Assurance to the Public

The Commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring a balanced approach that protects both the interests of consumers and the viability of utility providers. It assured stakeholders of ongoing efforts to monitor utility performance, enforce regulatory standards, and drive value-for-money in utility service delivery.

“We thank stakeholders for their continued support and assure the public of our resolve to ensure value for money and improved service delivery,” the PURC stated.
