The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has made a passionate appeal to the Ghanaian media to rise above partisan bitterness and end the culture of retaliatory politics.
Speaking at the 2025 World Press Freedom Day Celebration and Honours Night organised by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Afenyo-Markin challenged the press to become agents of national healing rather than platforms for political vengeance.
“You must not echo the bitterness of extremists in the political space, but challenge it,” he charged. “The culture of retaliatory politics must end—and the media must be bold enough to lead this change.”
Addressing a distinguished gathering that included the Minister of State for Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, diplomats, media icons, and honourees, Afenyo-Markin emphasised the need for a new national narrative that unites rather than divides.
He urged the media to judge governments by how well they serve the people, not by how effectively they silence opponents. “The path forward depends on your courage and boldness,” he said.
Touching on the event’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” – the Minority Leader acknowledged the growing influence of AI in shaping journalism.
While recognising AI’s benefits—like efficiency and innovation—he warned of its dangers, including disinformation, surveillance, and deepfake technology.
“We must ensure that technology advances our values, not erodes them,” – he said, calling for national and global frameworks that protect journalistic freedom and promote ethical AI use.
Afenyo-Markin praised Ghanaian journalists for their resilience despite growing pressures, urging them to continue safeguarding democracy through factual and fearless reporting.
The event also celebrated media champions, including veteran journalist Cameron Duodu, whose recognition drew a standing ovation from diplomats, media legends, and political leaders alike.
