The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on the Nigerian Authorities to conduct swift investigations into the alleged police brutality in Nigeria.
This follows a protest by a social movement to end the brutalities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad against Nigerians.
The protesters are calling for an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a controversial unit of the Nigerian Police Force with a long record of abuses.
A statement signed by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean-Claude Kessingland Brou expressed the Commission’s condolence to the families and friends of persons who have lost their lives during the protests.
According to the statement, although ECOWAS Commission recognizes the rights of citizens to freedom of expression, it is also if the view that those rights should be exercised in a non violent manner.
ECOWAS has called on the allegation protesters to to remain peaceful in the conduct of their demonstrations.
“Finally ECOWAS Commission appeals to the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Nigerian youth and the civil society to urgently pursue dialogue for an early and amicable resolution of this social unrest and maintain the Nigerian image as a bastion of law and order,” the statement added.
