Fisheries Ministry distributes Covid-19 safety items to four coastal regions

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aqua Culture Development has started  distributing  safety items to fight the spread of Covid-19 pandemic along the coastal areas and the inland fishing areas.
The fishing communities are believed to be fertile grounds for the rapid spread of Covid-19 pandemic since most artisanal fishers congregate daily in close contact at the landing beaches to offload and market their fish.
Besides, the fishing communities and fishers are among the most vulnerable and therefore accessing and purchasing of these safety items would be a challenge.
The items include 4,000 hand sanitizers, 200 gallons of liquid soap, 500 Veronica buckets, 500 metallic bucket stands, 1000 pieces of tissue, 20, 000 nose masks, 1000 basins and 75 chest freezers.
Sector Minister, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye who inspected the items before the onward distribution noted that the initiative is a pro-poor measure to curtail the pandemic.
She further advised  fishers to observe safety protocols by social distancing at least 6-feet between each other and at all times wear the nose masks.
The Minister admonished the fishers to use the chest freezers well to help reduce or manage their post harvest losses since sales and marketing have generally been slow.
