Flooding: Greater Accra, Eastern to experience more rains-GMET warns

A Senior Meteorologist with the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), Joshua Asamoah, has warned that the Greater Accra Region and the Eastern Region are expected to experience more rains than usual this year.

According to him, the Middle Belt, including Ashanti, the Volta, Bono will experience normal rainfall.

However, he said those in the Northern part of the country including the Savannah Region will have less rainfall.

His assertion follows the perennial flooding the country, especially Accra is facing.

Over the years, parts of the country, especially Accra, Central, Western Regions and others have experienced floods which have swept away lives and properties.

Already, Accra is experiencing severe floods since it started raining in March.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, Joshua Asamoah said, “For those of us in Accra to the Eastern Coast of Ghana, we are expecting some normal to above normal rainfall. That means that the rains that we already experience in these regions, this year’s own will be a bit more.”

He said in February, the GMet did a seasonal forecast and noticed that despite experiencing more rains, it will not be heavier than normal.

However, he noted that more rains could cause more harm.

He observed that the rain started in March and will break in July in the Coastal areas and the Middle belts.

He said in September, it will start again and break in November.

For those in the Bono Region to the Northern Parts, he said it will rain from May to October.

In the meantime, he stated that the pattern of precipitation has not changed, while conceding that there have been few variations.

Joshua Asamoah stated that the manner in which humans use the land has contributed to climate change, citing tree felling and/or deforestation, construction of waterways, cementing or tilling of buildings, among others.
