Floods: Accra needs a new drainage master plan – Expert

Development and infrastructure expert, Dr. Camynta Baezie, has charged government to develop a new drainage master plan for Accra.

Dr. Baezie who is also a Development Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) stated that a Drainage Master Plan will identify the existing drainage deficiencies and develop drainage solutions to address the deficiencies, reduce flooding, and resolve public safety concerns and improve maintenance opportunities in Accra.

The Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Archibald Cobbinah confirmed five deaths after a heavy downpour in Accra Sunday night.  The downpour left Kwame Nkrumah Circle flooded leaving motorists no option than to find alternative routes.

Speaking with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Development and infrastructure expert, Dr. Camynta Baezie stated that the Accra had a drainage master plan which was drafted during  the Busia administration.

He added that successive governments ignored this masterplan due to the cost involved. The lack of a drainage master plan, according to him, causes Accra to flood anytime it rains.

Meanwhile, NADMO has attributed the floods to the indiscriminate disposure of garbage in gutters by residents. It has called on the government  to enforce strict laws to “punish people who litter and throw rubbish in our drains.”

“We all have a role to play to ensure we keep our cities and drainages clean.
