President John Dramani Mahama, FDA and the fisheries ministry have been Called to act swiftly to avert a situation of unethical use of formalin on dry fish in the country.
Dr. Victor Gadri– widows’ father, a businessman and philanthropist in an interview with Barimah Saakwa hinted that, most fish mongers and sellers of dry fishes across the country now uses formalin on all dry fish Koobi, Akosombo, and others in a form of preservation to prevent the fish from getting rotten in a shorter time.
Formalin which is used in our mortuary on dead bodies now being used on dry fishes to last long.
Food adulteration has become a global problem. Adulteration is not only disregarding the human rights for safe food, but also a serious threat to public health with numerous acute and chronic diseases.
Dr. Victor Gadri noted that, the physical and mental development of people has damaged by adulterated food. The consumption of adulterated food is silently poisoning human body everyday which may result a serious bad impact in our future. This thesis describes the health effects of the consumption of adulterated food, a complete narration of adulteration, and the role of the relevant authorities in its disposal.
Fish is an important source of protein all over the world, including Ghana. According to Dr. Gadri, the use of formaldehyde and formalin in various parts of the country by fish mongers in our markets should be threated with much human face.
The fishery sector plays an important role in the Ghanaian economy. It contributes 4% of the gross domestic product and 5% of the agricultural gross domestic product (10). It is estimated that 60% of the total animal protein requirement in the Ghanaian diet comes from fish (1).
Ghanaians are also advised to be very vigilant when buying fishing or smoke fish from the market and other places.
