Former Finance Minister, Kwesi Botchwey dies at 78

Dr. Kwesi Botchwey, a former Finance Minister under the Rawlings regime, has died at the age of 78.

According to sources, the respected economist died on Saturday morning at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a brief illness.

In the 1980s, Dr. Botchwey was the Secretary for Finance for the Provisional National Defence Council, which was led by then-Chairman Jerry John Rawlings. Later, when the country returned to constitutional rule, with the NDC forming the first government under the Fourth Republic, he became Minister of Finance.
