Galamsey has become a major problem in Ghana, as most youth claim there are inadequate jobs in the country. Due to this, most youths have ventured into illegal mining, which has led to the destruction of water bodies in the country.
River Ankobra, one of the biggest rivers in the western part of Ghana, served as a tourist site but was recently at risk of being destroyed by illegal miners. It has now been cleared as a result of an initiative introduced by the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. George Mireku Duker, called Operation Halt 2, which has been assigned by some river guards to protect the river from being destroyed.
Speaking to Atinka TV news reporter Abigail Owusu, some of the river guards said that they will guard the River Ankobrah and ensure that anyone who has no business on the river is caught and handed over to the authorities.
