A political analyst and governance expert, Dr. Osei Bonsu Owusu, has cautioned persons mounting pressure on the President to back the anti-gay bill.
This statement by the expert is in response to persons calling on the president to expediate action on the passage of the Promotion Of Proper Human Sexual Rights And Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021’.
The ‘Promotion Of Proper Human Sexual Rights And Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021’,also called the gay bill which is yet to be considered by parliament, seeks to unequivocally criminalize LGBTQI+ activities.
According to the anti gay bill, people of the same sex who engage in sexual intercourse are “liable on summary conviction to a fine of not less than seven hundred and fifty penalty units and not more than five thousand penalty units, or to a term of imprisonment of not less than three years and not more than five years or both.”
Commenting on the ongoing debate on LGBTQ, President Akufo Addo noted that he does not feel pressured.
“I don’t feel pressured about the ongoing debate , we are talking about public opinion, we are talking about legitimate process that is being used. What I would hope for is that the debate itself will be civil and that we would recognize the need to be civil and that we would recognize the need to be tolerant of each other even when there are opposing views..,” Akufo Addo added.

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Ghana Nie, political analyst and Governance expert, Dr. Osei Bonsu Owusu asked persons mounting pressure on the President to be tolerant as homosexuals also have the rights.
“ It seems people have made it to look like homosexualism is the biggest sin and that gays should be stoned to death. I believe there should be enough education for people to understand that no matter the crime committed by these individuals, they have the right to due process,” he added.
