Ghana Armed Forces Denies Allegations of Exploitation of Peacekeepers in Lebanon

By Philip Azu

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has dismissed recent media reports alleging the exploitation of Ghanaian troops serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The reports suggested that troops were prohibited from shopping outside their camps and were required to pay for their own airfare to Ghana during leave.

In an official statement issued by the Department of Public Relations, General Headquarters, Burma Camp, the GAF clarified that the allegations are false.

The statement explained that, due to the volatile security situation in UNIFIL’s area of operations, the Force Headquarters has authorised the establishment of eleven shops operated by local Lebanese vendors across two Ghanaian battalions (GHANBATT) locations. In addition, one Post Exchange shop is run by the battalion itself, giving troops multiple options for purchasing goods. “Many other battalions in UNIFIL also have similar arrangements,” the release noted.

On the claim that Ghanaian peacekeepers are paying for their own airfare, the GAF emphasised that the Government of Ghana fully funds the air travel of all Ghana Armed Forces peacekeepers, including those serving in Lebanon.

The Armed Forces warned that such misinformation could undermine troop morale, discipline, and the country’s reputation. Media practitioners were urged to verify facts before publication.

The statement was signed by the Acting Director General of Public Relations and circulated to all media houses.
