Ghana’s population hits 30.8 million

The Ghana Statistical Service has released provisional results of the just ended population and housing census.

According to Government statistician, Prof. Samuel Annim, Ghana’s population has increased from 24.7 million recorded in 2010 to 30.8 million.

The new figure represents an increase of 6.1 million in a spate of ten years.

After 44 days of field officers gathering data from the length and breadth of the country, the exercise has come to an end with Ghana’s population now at 30.8 million.

The Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions per the provisional results are the two most populous regions with each having a population of 5.4 million.

The Ahafo Region is the region with the least population of 0.6 million. Females in Ghana continue to dominate the population constituting 50.7% of the total population with men constituting 49.3% of our population.

Although females dominate, at the regional level, six regions had a higher number of males as compared to females while in the remaining 10 regions females dominated the country’s population.

In terms of household figures as presented by Government statistician Prof. Samuel Annim, Ghana currently has 8.4 million households representing an increase of 2.8 million from what we recorded in 2010. Greater Accra leads with 1.7 million households followed by Ashanti region (1.5 million).

North East is the region with the least household. In relation to the number of structures in the country currently, Ghana now has 10.7 million structures with 20% of this figure being uncompleted.

Greater Accra Region leads with 2.1 million structures with 15% of this figure being metal structures and kiosk. Again, greater Accra dominated with the highest number of kiosks in the country.

North East region recorded the least structures but dominated with the highest number of completed structures while Ashanti region dominated in terms of uncompleted structures. Prof Samuel Annim in an interview with the media had this to say.

The 2021 population and housing census is the 5th census post-independence and it is the first fully digital census.

The census was supposed to have been conducted in march 2020 but was postponed following coronavirus outbreak.

The exercise started with listing of structures on June 13, 2021 followed by enumeration of persons on June 27, 2021. As directed by the statistical act 2019 ACT 1003, Ghana is to conduct census every decade.
