GIBA pushes for discount on income tax, electricity bills for media houses

 
The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) is pushing for  30% to 50% discount on income tax and electricity bills for the media.
This appeal is as a result of the economic hardship the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic has brought to managers of media houses.
Speaking at a joint press conference by Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Association of Women in Media (ASWIM) and Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), Executive Secretary for GIBA, Gloria Hadzi said the discounts in electricity tariffs should be considered since media houses are running at losses due to the pandemic.
She also called on the government to include media practitioners in the allocation of insurance packages for frontline workers in the covid-19 alleviation fight.
Supporting the insurance idea of GIBA, President for PRINPAG, Mr Andrew Edwin Arthur called on government to institute a Covid-19 media alleviation fund to assist media practitioners covering the pandemic.
“All media practitioners who have been lending support to the national effort also as front liners in the fight against the spread of the virus and in this sense we expect to be elevated to that status for the purpose in the ensuing argument. Apart from our frontline role in educating the general populace on the dangers associated with COVID-19 and the need to observe critically all the safety measures and protocols most of us have come into direct contact with carriers and Coronavirus patients,” he said.
