GJA opens Book of Condolence for Godwin Avenorgbo

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has opened a book of condolence dedicated to the memory of Godwin Avenorgbo at the International Press Centre.

Godwin Avenorgbo, also known as the Grandmaster died on Monday, August 19, 2024 after a sudden illness.

He was the Chairman of the GJA’s 75th Anniversary Planning Committee and the Communications Director of Melcom Group.

He was also a former broadcaster who worked with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) until his retirement.  

The Grandmaster was 78 .

At the opening of the book of condolence, Information Minister, Fatima Abubakar, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, Executives of the GJA, veteran journalists, family members and media practitioners were present to sign the book of condolence.

Speaking after signing the book of condolence, Fatima Abubakar expressed sadness over the death of Godwin Avenorgbo.

She described him as a very principled and an intelligent man who has made a lot of impact in the media space .

She also noted how Godwin Avenorgbo was always ready to teach people, correct them and share ideas with them.

Fatima Abubakar assured that the Ministry will collaborate with the GJA and to support the family with the burial of the Grandmaster.

For his part, the GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour also stated that the sudden death of Godwin Avenorgbo came as a shock to him and the entire GJA.

He noted how energetic the Grandmaster was, adding that when he was tasked to be the Chairman of the GJA’s 75th anniversary, he was always up to the task.

Meanwhile, Mr Dwumfour said the GJA plans to honour the memory of Godwin Avenorgbo and would collaborate with the family to give him a befitting burial.

“He is a trailblazer when it comes to the history of GJA, he has contributed his quota, he has paid his dues and we are doing this for him because he died in line of duty,” he said.

The Head of Godwin Avenorgbo’s Family, Mr Kanghla Blasu also noted how deeply the family was pained over the death of their beloved.

He said Godwin Avenorgbo started from a humble beginning but rose up to where he was until his passing.

He again noted that in due course, the family will make known plans of his burial to the public.
