The win was Mars' fifth of the night: The artist also won song of the year for "24K Magic," best R&B performance for "That's What I Like," best R&B album for 24K Magic and best engineered album for 24K Magic.
Record of the year honors the performer(s), producer(s), recording engineer(s) and/or mixer(s) and mastering engineer(s) of a single breakout song from that year, whereas album of the year honors a whole album and song of the year honors the writer of a single.
In Mars' acceptance speech, the artist thanked his girlfriend Jessica, his fans and his father, "Look at me, Pop, I'm at the Grammys right now!" he said.
