Imam lauds gov’t over Asawase Killings report

Asaawase Zongo Chief Imam, Sheik Yusifya, has lauded the government for its intervention in the Asaawase Killings.

Seven men were killed in Asaawase in the Ashanti Region in July 2018. The seven were allegedly mistaken by the police for members of an eight-man armed robbery gang who had earlier attacked a sprinter bus and shot dead a police officer with the SWAT Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command near Manso Nkwanta in the Amasie West District of the region.

A seven-member committee was finally instituted days to investigate the killings. The committee has since interdicted some twenty-one (21) police personnel and are to be subjected to a formal criminal investigation, for their alleged role in the killing of seven Zongo youth at Manso Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region on July 17, 2018 on the grounds that it found no evidence that the deceased persons were armed robbers.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Asaawase Zongo Chief Imam, Sheik Yusifya, stated that the seven persons who were killed left wives, kids and  parents  who are currently shattered due to the death of their kinsmen.

He noted that the government has also promised to compensate families of the deceased, which according to him, is a step in the right direction.

“We are happy with the report, we live with these men and their families and we can vouch that this man are not armed robbers in anyway. There are laws in Ghana and the 21 policemen who have been interdicted should be held responsible,”he added.
