Implicating Napo in GetFund saga an act of political expediency – PRO

Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, Ekow Vincent, has denied reports that the Minister for Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, was granted a GetFund Scholarship as sector minister to study in Harvard University.
Minister for Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, is in the news for receiving a US$11,200 GETfund scholarship to study in Harvard.
Dr Opoku Prempeh and other politicians have been accused of receiving funding for their studies abroad.
Per the report, Dr Opoku Prempeh received US$11,200 to study National and International Security at Harvard University and US$12,800 as tuition and living allowance.
In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, Ekow Vincent explained that contrary to reports, the Minister for Education has not been granted scholarship since 2017.
According to him, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh was a recipient of GETFund award in 2014 to participate in a three-week certificate programme at the Kennedy School of Govt, Harvard University for the promotion of his discharge in Parliament.
He reiterated that the GETFund award was during tenure of the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) and not that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Meanwhile, Matthew Opoku Prempeh himself in a Facebook post has asked the general public to disregard the news.
“I have noted, with dismay, news carried by some media that suggests that I have, as a minister, received a scholarship from the Ghana Education Trust Fund for studies at Harvard.”
“This impression is false and calculated to cause embarrassment and public ridicule. I have not received any form of sponsorship for any programme or course of study from GETFund of scholarship secretariat since becoming a minister. I have been a recipient of GETFund award in 2014 to participate in a three-week certificate programme at the Kennedy School of Govt, Harvard University,” he posted on Facebook.
