Int. Women’s Day: AWMA, Canada organise forum for women in media

As part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, the Alliance for Women in Media Africa(AWMA) in collaboration with the Canadian High Commission organised a media stakeholder’s forum on the theme,”Equity for Women in Media, Who Cares?”.

The Programme was held in two sessions, the Mentorship session and the main forum.

At the Mentorship forum, the Mentors, Oheneyere Gifty Anti, Chief Executive Officer(CEO), GDA Media Ltd, Author and Host of The Standpoint TV Programme, Portia Gabor, 2022 GJA Journalist of the Year and Presenter TV3, Mrs Linda Asante Agyei, Vice President of GJA and Editor at GNA, Regina Asamoah, Editor Atinka TV/Radio and Host of Missing Children on Atinka TV, Eyram Bashan, Media and Communications Consultant and Shamima Muslim, Convenor of AWMA had a conversation with the early career media professionals, trainees and students on “What I wish I Knew before Starting my media Journey”.

At the end of the conversation, most of the Mentors said they knew journalism was a lifestyle, they wished they knew the salary was not much but they had to invest in themselves with their own money.

Some also said they wish they knew the profession was a lifestyle and it was also time demanding.

Speaking at the event, the Convenor for AWMA, Shamima Muslim also called on media owners to ensure equity for women in media houses as far as roles and opportunities are concerned.

She called for equal opportunities for women, saying that women must be highly represented at top management same as the men.

For women who are abused at the media houses, she encouraged them to speak up so that their issues would be addressed.

Oheneyere Gifty Anti also noted how she invested in herself and her career and urged young journalists to do same.

Regina Asamoah also urged young journalists to develop interest in the specialisation of beats in order to help develop the nation.

She advised them not to allow money go before them, adding that their hard work will rather open doors for them.

Also, she added her voice to her fellow women calling on media managers to ensure women work in safer environment.
