Interdiction of 3 police officers over assault not far-reaching– GJA

General Secretary  of the  Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Kofi Yeboah, has lauded Ghana Police Service over the interdiction of some three police officers for assaulting three Ghanaian Times journalists on 14th March 2019.

He, however, added that that the interdiction of Inspector Isaac Opare of the Ministries Division in Accra, No. 37698 Sgt Ebenezer Akrofi of the Accra Regional Police headquarters and No 50852 L/Cpl Evans Kofi Ntim of Police visibility Accra is not far-reaching enough.

He stated that reports gathered by the GJA indicated that the officers including one military personnel assaulted the three Journalists and that interdicting 3 out of the 10  is not the best.

“We are however trusting that after the investigations are done in a week’s time other arrests will be made”, he said.

Mr. Kofi Yeboah has ,however, hinted that the GJA is in talks with it lawyers to file a civil suit on behalf of the three assaulted Journalists.

Some three Journalists of the Ghanaian Times were assaulted in Accra Thursday, March 14, 2019 after that a policeman riding on an unregistered motorbike allegedly hit a Ghanaian Times vehicle, breaking the mirror and windscreen of the car in the process.

The driver of the Ghanaian Times vehicle chased and managed to block the policeman around Kinbu, a few metres away from the accident scene and reportedly started video-recording the incident with his mobile phone, an act which got the policeman furious.

In an attempt to stop the driver from recording the incident, the Policeman tried to snatch the mobile phone from the reporter who also resisted.

This led to a tussle where the Policeman reportedly punched the face of the reporter resulting in blood gushing out from his nostril. Other policemen and a soldier in uniform allegedly joined in the beatings of the reporter.

Some reporters of the Ghanaian Times who were also in the vehicle  were not spared; they were heckled, and in the process, Raissa, a nursing mother, collapsed and was rushed to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital for treatment.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) after the incident issued a statement to condemn the  act and called on the Police Administration to undertake swift investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile a press statement signed by the Assistant commissioner of Police, David Eklu, for the Inspector General of Police, has directed the interdiction of these officers.
