The Ministry of the Interior is set to launch a comprehensive digital services platform by December 2025, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak announced on Monday, July 14, during the Government Accountability Series briefing.

The new platform aims to streamline access to critical services such as dual citizenship applications, explosives permits, private security licenses, and immigration quota approvals—all of which are currently processed manually. The Minister said the digitalization initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance efficiency, reduce delays, and improve transparency across the Ministry’s operations.

“The Ministry has begun the digitalisation of these services, which, when launched by the end of this year, will streamline workflows, reduce delays, improve public access to services, and promote transparency and accountability,” Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak stated.

Services such as renunciation of citizenship and applications for arms permits have long been hampered by bureaucratic bottlenecks, often resulting in frustration for both Ghanaians and foreigners. The new platform is expected to significantly ease these challenges.

In a separate but related development, the Minister announced that an Independent Police Complaints Commission will be established within the next six months.

The commission will function independently of the police administration and will have the authority to investigate serious incidents involving police officers, as well as set professional standards and protocols.

The establishment of the commission comes at a time when the Interior Ministry oversees key national security institutions, including the Ghana Police Service, the National Fire Service, the Prison Service, the Immigration Service, and the National Security apparatus.

Highlighting the Inspector-General of Police’s recent swift disciplinary action against an officer who assaulted a journalist during the Ablekuma North rerun, the Minister emphasized that the new commission will institutionalise accountability within the police service.

Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak also revealed that a new memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Youth Development will allow the first cohort of security interns to begin training on Thursday.

The interns will be deployed across the police, fire, and prison services—an initiative aimed at enhancing departmental operations while creating job opportunities for young people.
