A Programmes Manager at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Kwame Amponsah Achiano, says the Johnson & Johnson vaccines the country received recently are being administered according to the doses received.

Ghana took delivery of 177,600 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on August 7 as part of the first batch of the Africa Union’s African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT).

So far, only 405,971 have been fully vaccinated by receiving both doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, whilst 865,422 have received only the first dose.

Ghana has recorded 109,022 cases of the virus, and currently has 6,765 cases after a surge in the last 40 days.

The Ghana Health Service started giving out jabs of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine against the COVID-19 virus in the Greater Accra Region on Friday, August 13, 2021.

Vaccine shots in other coronavirus hotspots such as the Ashanti Region also started on Monday, August 16, 2021.

He said 100,000 doses were sent to Greater Accra while the Ashanti Region had 60,000 doses.

Meanwhile Dr Kwame Amponsah Achiano said the regions will receive theirs today, adding that the country is expected to receive more vaccines by the end of week.

For those who had already taken the AstraZeneca, he said the World Health Organisation has issued a warning that they should not mix vaccines and so they will not administer the Johnson & Johnson to those who took the AstraZeneca jabs.

He said those going for the vaccine should go with their ID Cards so that they will know if they have taken the jabs before or not.

Dr Kwame Amponsah Achiano also warned the public not to go for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine if they have already taken the AstraZeneca jabs, saying that they do that at their own risk.
