June 3: AMA promises continuous support for disaster victims

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has promised its unflinching support for victims of the 2015 June 3 twin disaster.

More than 150 people perished in the middle of a heavy flooding and rainstorm mid-night Wednesday, June 3 2015, after a fuel tanker exploded at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Branch of the GOIL filling station in Accra.

Survivors of the disaster numbering about 100 have since complained that they have not received the benefits due them after they were discharged from the hospital. At a thanksgiving service the survivors called on the government as well as benevolent bodies to come to their aid.

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Accra Mayor, Mohammed Adjei Sowah mentioned that the AMA shares in the plight of the victims and that he will continue to support the victims in whatever way that he can.

According to Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the AMA as part of its plans has invested about 1.5 million Ghana Cedis in desilting and dredging gutters to ensure that Accra becomes flood free. “We will plead with the people of Accra to desist from depositing refuse in the gutter. It cannot be a cycle where the AMA will always have to desilt gutters, we will need to help make Accra clean” he said.
